The lawsuit against the large particle accelerator was dismissed

Roy Cezana reports on the rejection of the frivolous lawsuit to stop the experiment in the particle accelerator at CERN. However, the public relations that the plaintiffs made for the accelerator and for particle physics in general is worth a lot * Federal Judge Helen Gilmore dismissed the lawsuit, arguing that the Honolulu court does not have jurisdiction over the European particle accelerator

The place: BHD 10. The purpose: reserves, refresher training for medics. I join a group of 14 citizens in IDF uniforms, and we tirelessly accept the evil of the decree and identify ourselves according to the order. Moti deals in electronics and repairs. Marina sells flowers in Netanya. Geva is now starting a master's degree in biology.Roey Tsezana is doing a PhD in nanotechnology.

A moment of silence. 13 people look at each other, wondering who will speak first. Then the questions start flowing.

"Do you know about that experiment in Switzerland?"

"Did you hear that part about the physicists going to blow up the Earth?"

"No, don't blow up! They could create black holes that would suck up the mass of the Earth. But there is also a chance that strangelets will be formed, which may also turn all the other particles in our star into more strangelets."

The last comment was from the flower seller.

And all this makes me think and wonder. In the last twenty years, the level of interest of the public in physics has decreased significantly. Various universities around the world have already closed their physics departments due to lack of enrollment. This is side by side with the fact that the physical sciences laid the foundation for today's electronics, computers, electricity and almost every technological advancement we experience. And despite all this, the public is not moved by physics. Except on that fateful day of reservists, on September 10. How did a physical experiment manage to create such a great uproar among the generally indifferent public?

And here I must unfortunately report that at least part of the publicity that accompanied the construction of the large particle accelerator (LHC - Large Hadron Collider) was abruptly interrupted in recent days, with the rejection of the lawsuit against the construction of the accelerator. The LHC made headlines in America thanks to the lawsuit filed by Mr. Walter Wagner from Hawaii last year, against the companies participating in the construction of the accelerator. Wagner and his partner Luis Sancho claimed in the lawsuit that, "The collision of two atoms at near the speed of light will cause an irreversible collapse that will lead to the creation of a miniature version of a giant black hole... Eventually, the entire Earth will be sucked into an ever-growing micro-black hole , and will turn into a medium-sized black hole, around which the satellites, the moon, etc. will continue to circle."

Some argue that any theory can be true, if only it is described graphically enough. It's pretty clear that Sancho Wagner believes that, because they didn't go small. Their lawsuit is directed against the United States Department of Energy, the Permilab particle accelerator near Chicago, CERN and the National Science Institute, among others. The physicist community read the statement of the lawsuit, and didn't quite know where to begin to respond. In nuclear physics, unfortunately, we talk in terms of equations and variables, not in poetic descriptions. But when the lawsuit spread across America and made it into the mainstream newspapers, the physicists realized they had to strike back.

Since word of the lawsuit became public, famous physicists have been interviewed in almost every newspaper and explained the basic physics behind the particle accelerator, and why we need it. They explained about black holes, and why micro-black holes are not dangerous for us. They described the impending discovery of the Higgs boson, which could link all physical forces. And what's more, they added with sparkling eyes, it would be even more wonderful if we didn't find the Higgs boson, but we managed to confirm the connection between gravity and other dimensions. Such an insight, when it reaches its full realization, will allow us to control the mass and store it in dimensions we were not aware of until today.

This is how the best physicists in the Western countries flaunted themselves on the pages of newspapers, and aside from the very tempting carrot, they also presented the facts as they are. They explained that black holes are formed every day due to cosmic ray impacts, and have not yet caused any damage. The same theories that predict that black holes may form in an accelerator also predict that the black holes will dissipate before they pump even one more atom into them. Even the strangelets that may be created according to the theory, should not cause any damage according to the same theory itself.

Today, all this activity bore its first fruit, when federal judge Helen Gilmore dismissed the suit, arguing that the Honolulu court lacked jurisdiction over the European particle accelerator. But the real fruits of this ridiculous affair lie in the effect on the public. In the past year, the entire public - children and adults alike - has been exposed to physics at the highest levels, when it is explained in a simple and understandable way for every ear. Children read physics between the pages of the newspaper, on the front page of Ynet and many schools probably also held social hour on 'how to defend against a Swiss black hole'. Physics, ladies and gentlemen, did not disappear from the world, nor was it a phlegm miracle. Tens of thousands of children and teenagers, who never thought to be interested in the intricacies of the universe and the particles that make it up, are now starting their next school year. They will be able to choose their majors, and I would be very surprised if there isn't an influx of physics at the 5 unit level in high schools. The same children who heard in the last few months about black holes, strange particles and the beginning of the universe, are the ones who will populate the physics departments in a few years.

So it's true that this lawsuit is ridiculous, and it's true that the plaintiffs made fun of themselves. But really we should all cherish and thank them from the bottom of our hearts, because the public relations service they did for nuclear physics is worth much more than the few pennies they invested in the lawsuit. Yes, they will multiply like them.

  1. Stupid claim
The scientists are always right, until today not a single invention or theoretical research has endangered the fate of humanity, this will not happen in the future either, scientists as a group and as individuals are responsible people who will never allow the results of an experiment to develop technology that will harm humans, the countries that appoint the research are also responsible and will not develop technological which can be military in its use,

I have no doubt that the moment after "antimatter" was discovered, someone thought "how to make money from it" and someone else thought "how much energy can it produce and at what price" and someone else thought "how many megatons is it"
    sweet Dreams,

  2. To Michael
I will take your words into account and check my calculations again. If they are correct I will post.
    And now it's 1:00 a.m. a second time.
Good night, I'm really going to Shawn now

  3. Yehuda:
Do as you wish but know that there is no way it will be true.
If it is not gravitational pushing but only pressure differences of some space gas then it will act differently from body to body - according to its mass and specific weight and it will not be possible to talk about the "galaxy".
This is before the calculation errors that there must be (because it is not possible to make a correct calculation without taking the above into account)

  4. Dear Michael

Thanks for your comment, but, nothing to do with Pushing Gravity!
I simply answered the question of what should be the pressure differences between the center of the galaxy and its edge for it to spin at the speed it spins. Gravitation can be preserved on my part, it only contributes 10% anyway. I will bring an idea for a solution to the remaining 90% without a dark mass. Just a nice mathematical calculation, they will want, they will eat, they won't want then no.

And by the way, I don't see disgrace in anything, but we won't get into an argument.

    Good night
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  5. Yehuda:
Be careful because already at the beginning of things it is clear that you have a mistake.
The term "pressure", as it is accepted in gases, is not relevant at all in the gravity pushing model.
I hope you figure it out on your own and avoid further humiliation.

  6. And by the way Michael
I went over the calculations I made on the pressure required to rotate the galaxy and if I'm not mistaken, it is a much smaller pressure than what I told you.
I will write an article about it.
    Good night and pleasant winter

In my opinion, putting someone in some stigmatizing box is no different from any ignorance in any other intellectual field. Prejudices have always been the Achilles heel of humanity. And the question of whether the people of science in general perceive the trigger that my personal place is trying to check.
I may be "mysterious" as long as no one knows me, but the nickname implied by some on the site is not
Appropriate in general to my education and my visible behavior perhaps even more than all the known and "accepted" norms in society for all kinds of interests and all kinds of different motives.
It is possible that years of ingrained collective and private concealment have also created inherent conditions of patterns of mass repression and misleading prejudices.
    I hope things will improve..more.

I remember answering you exactly that question. I think you're exaggerating, and maybe it's time to treat your comments differently.

  13. To my father
And what is the truth? I hope the experiment is not a disaster for us because the court ruled that because it does not have jurisdiction it cannot hear the lawsuit and not because the accelerator is not dangerous... and I heard that there was a lecture at the Weizmann Institute last Thursday about the experiment...

  14. why new

Unlike the sites that spread mysticism, on the science site the mystics will encounter the correct responses, and this is the important difference. I really appreciate my father who doesn't resort to almost the whip of deleting a comment from the site. And it's good that things are done this way, because freedom of speech is also an important thing.
    Shabbat Shalom and Shana Tovah

  15. On this site, Hugin's truth really impresses me
The site is also used as a source of distribution of mysticism (see Hugin's conduct).

  16. To Roy
Thank you for the answer, I asked because I read somewhere that a black hole can cause a super nova that will cause the earth to explode and all kinds of other things and I was also afraid because the experiment is underground and they didn't know what would happen as a result of these collisions because this is the first time something like this is being done..

  17. What does that actually mean? Lest we die from some supernova (not that I know what it is but oh well)...??

  18. One thing is certain that our descendants will pay for everything.
And as for the accelerator, I believe that in twenty years half of it will be destroyed so that what remains will be in the shape of a crescent, and it will become a mosque that will serve the Muslim majority in Europe.
    Inshallah!

    Happy New Year

  19. Gentlemen who oppose progress like the actions of the prophets who already know (?) its zero results - a bit out of proportion.
Take a deep breath: real scientists from all over the world have been participating in the preparations for these experiments for over a decade tirelessly, outstanding and diligent scientists - and here you are, without any formal certification on the subject, biting your tongue??? (The honorable Mr. Sabdarmish, not to mention Hugin, etc.).
Do you really know better than all those scientists? Did you forget the word modesty??
and more. Regarding the budget - proportion again: not long ago the Olympics ended in China. The best of the best. Just a little expensive - according to estimates between 30 and 40 billion dollars. Many times more than the huge project in the heart of the Swiss rock. And what do we have left of her except video clips (although stunning!) and tears of champions???
Is the human spirit really not worth all these investments, is the attempt to solve the greatest riddle of all - and all possible satellites as a result - not likely to advance humanity more than the current collapse of investment managers and greedy banks with thousands of billions stolen directly from our pockets???

Do you not agree? OK. You didn't pay. But you signed your descendants lest they ask to enjoy the fruits of said research. Because you yourselves are signed above to the progress drawon.
Because there will be fruits - on your nose and your heart!!!

  20. Hugin my dear shining light

You won't believe it, but this time, yes, yes, this time…..I agree with your every word!
Tears stand in my eyes, glistening, vibrating in agreement with your bright words - I almost said: - My words of God are alive.
You defined the monster in Sarn in a wonderful way:-
"The accelerator game is the supposedly most advanced toy of the scientists: the most ostentatious - empty - and the most monstrous ever built. It exactly reflects the cold and alienated space in which many are. A competitive-achieving mentality - a heavy disaster.", end of quote.
    Well spoken.!
This definition must be engraved in white letters of kiddush on the development of every existing academy and every delusional parliament, in our little galaxy.
I wish we would have the day when a sword monster opens it, a grave for the accumulation of billions of dollars, they will rest on their bed, say your mouth along the twenty-seven kilometers of shame - failure. .
Only then, you and I, together, will be able to sail on top of a shining whale in a sea of know-it-alls, with magical responsive pride.

Good evening and happy new year
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  21. Yehuda:
    I don't make myself.
The only one about whom it is claimed that he made himself is God. All the rest were done in some way that was not based on themselves.
I repeat that nothing is stuck.
I don't know what you are basing your words on.
It is true that experiments are done to confirm or disprove theories. This is the essence of science and there is nothing special here - certainly not one that justifies the kind of disdain you are showing. Is it really better in your opinion to state a theory that is hidden by the facts even without a special experiment as true?
Nothing is stuck and the developers of the various theories continue to develop them with joy and age. The only problem is that they have no idea if they are true. For this you need to conduct an experiment.

  22. Money is not personal here at all. ostentatious grandiose expensive monstrous empty… vanity vanity. Let them do what they want to do, in the name of science. It's so well known and controlled that even if nothing comes of it, it's good. Money is in our world like water. Not missing. There is no lack where there is. In any case, there is nowhere. The children will play in front of us.

Dying a black guy is exotic. Think of all the unlucky ones who die in car accidents or any number of such trivial events. There is no scapegoating on Judgment Day. From the soup of iniquity, crime and sin.

    Happy New Year,
    Ami Bachar

  23. Roy Cezana
Let's look at things in proportion.
The guys who work in the field work very, very hard for many, many years.
Sometimes it is a very big sacrifice because many years can pass without real reward.
Without reaching breakthroughs sometimes not even small.
These are very, very talented people with fantastic technical abilities. Which of course doesn't guarantee anything. A lot of luck is involved in this matter to achieve any results.
The mathematics and physics involved in the matter are really abstract to the extent that it is very difficult even for the amateur scientist to understand the matter. And it's not just about the extra dimensions.
But people take a gamble and choose a path according to their heart's inclinations. Just like any startup.
The initial successes instill hope for continued and large-scale successes.
But as is known in many cases the business gets stuck after a successful and careful start.
The main reason stems from the very long maturation time of certain issues that is difficult to predict in advance.
Any scientist who has gone through a process of maturing in the field he developed will tell you that he only understands what he is really doing after maturing and that the beginning was actually a matter of luck and chance.
The same is true here, the LHC may help researchers mature their research or refine it.
The matter of the extra dimensions is not as real as it might sound. We are talking about mathematical principles mainly in this framework it is important but not actually the existence of such a reality is misleading.
It is more correct to say that it has no more value than to say that there is an astrological influence on the studies.
Everything is ultimately a matter of result and actual future benefit.

  24. Yehuda meant the healthy and practical logic that serves life and not destroys it.
The accelerator game is the supposedly most advanced toy of the scientists: ostentatious - empty - and the most monstrous ever built. It exactly reflects the cold and alienated space in which many are. A competitive mindset - achievement - heavy disaster.
Such a grandiose expenditure that falls down the drain is said to be forgivable - not so if there are unforeseen and irreversible consequences for the fate of humanity...and the planet.
But, of course, it's petty to understand... the sublimity of the experiment.

  25. Yehuda,

"There is no need to spend billions of euros, but only to use the cold logic that we all have."

Come and show us all what your cold logic is based on
Show us the mathematical equations as your colleague A. Einstein
Talks and hand gestures do not justify any theory, math is also needed.
If you confirm your theory with mathematical equations and apply them to the galaxies and it works, then maybe you will win the Nobel Prize.

  26. To Michael

What, are you fooling yourself? After all, everything is stuck!, the fact that you say it's nothing, just the emphases of all kinds of scientists that need to be checked, just some light treatment that they do in the "barangay"?
So you are wrong and misleading, in a big way.
All they do is try to prove their paradigms. Ignorant politicians were convinced to spend billions of euros that will lead to almost nothing.
One component has already broken down after a day and a half of work and for your information there are dozens more such components that are damaged, when will they crash?
I agree with Higgs' approach on the subject.

In addition, in a framed article, I continue to argue that they will not find anything of value because none of them, advocates and categories of the facility, have the courage to imagine that gravity does not exist at distances, that there is no dark mass and not even dark energy.
To understand this, it is not necessary to spend billions of euros, but only to use the cold logic that we all have. This is of course my opinion and there is no point in rekindling the debate.

    Happy New Year

  27. higgs,

I don't claim to be a particle physicist, but my understanding relies on reading the opinions of various people in the field. As far as I know, there are different theories today competing for the best explanation of the universe. The problem is that most of them exist on a mathematical level and require the existence of additional dimensions, and this is very difficult to check.
In an article that recently appeared in Galileo, two particle physicists predicted that the accelerator could, among other things, discover certain additional dimensions, if they exist, thereby giving confirmation to at least one of the existing theories.

In the end, I agree with you that no one currently holds 'something complete and feasible', and that's exactly why we need an accelerator, which can focus the physicist community on one theory until its completion.

  28. Michael
It happens to be a bit from my field of work aware of the work of others.
Everyone puts a lot of work into what seems promising. These theories seem quite promising up to a point. The problem is, as they say in the barangay, at the moment no one is smart enough to solve everything and close all the corners. There are still large gaps in the theories themselves not to mention important predictions under reasonable testable conditions and of course the possibilities of applying all of this are quite far away.
Of course, after so many years of work, everyone in their field is quite convinced that they will not waste their time in vain, it would not be wise for themselves to think so.
People live in the hope that the experiments will not only confirm certain directions in their personal theory but will of course open the way to close the loose ends.
In short, the self-conviction here works no less strongly than the journalistic motifs and, on the whole, coalesces with them.
No one is willing to admit that he does not actually hold something complete and realizable in the future.

  29. Higgs:
And on what basis do you say that?
I have talked with quite a few physicists who confirm what the media publishes (each with their own emphases).
What exactly do you think is "stuck"?
The fact that not everything is closed in any theory is because there is a problem of motivation to continue in any of the currently open directions without deciding which is the right direction. After all, theories can be built endlessly.

  30. Roy Cezana
Most of the public is filled with misleading information, perhaps mainly due to the stated role of the press to create images that are known.
The main function of the LHC is not to verify or disprove this or that theory that already exists.
    The truth is completely different.
All the physical continuation theories (strings, super symmetry, quantum loop, etc.) without exception got stuck on their feet without being able to close the theoretical complex. The specific purpose of all these theories is to solve the problem of the gap between gravity described in the language of general relativity and the other three forces (electrical, strong, and weak) described in the language of quantum physics.
The experiments are supposed to give clues as to how to proceed from here on. It is possible that this is most likely what will happen, that bridging the gap will require a change of paradigms from both the relativity and quantum directions.
The difficulty involved in this is mainly psychological because these theories are quite closed and provide computational predictions that can be tested and applied under normal conditions.
Changing paradigms may be painful because it will be necessary to build new computational systems based on completely new approaches.
In conclusion, the LHC is designed to help scientists know what exactly they are doing and to understand what they are actually saying and thinking.

  31. Response to the cool commenter, we are suffering from availability problems on the site for various reasons and we are currently in the middle of the process of moving to new servers. There may be additional problems in the coming days, but we will try to reduce this to the minimum possible.

And a response to Roy, I agree with what is written here even though the press did not always present physics in a good light, after all you need an explosive headline to sell newspapers.

  32. The real problem is those who were really afraid and thought it was a conspiracy of Swiss scientists who wanted to destroy the world.

Why did the site crash now for just over a minute?
