LG joins IBM QUANTUM NETWORK to advance applications of quantum computing

The two companies will work to support big data applications, artificial intelligence, connected cars, digital transformation and robotics applications

LG announced that it has joined the IBM Quantum Network, which promotes applications of quantum computing. Joining the IBM Quantum network will allow LG to benefit from access to IBM's quantum computing systems, as well as IBM's expertise in the field of quantum computing, and IBM's Qiskit open source quantum information software development kit.

LG aims to use IBM Quantum technology to explore applications of quantum computing in any field that requires processing a large amount of data, such as the world of artificial intelligence, connected cars, digital transformation, Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics applications. In this way, LG will be able to leverage advances in hardware and software in the world of quantum computing and applications that will rely on them, in accordance with IBM's quantum roadmap. Leveraging IBM Quantum technology will allow LG to provide training to its workforce, and explore how potential breakthroughs can be implemented in the industry areas in which it operates.

Quantum computing is a significant development in the field of calculation. While classical computers calculate with bits representing 0 and 1, quantum computers use quantum bits - qubits - that harness subatomic physical phenomena from the world of quantum mechanics, such as interference and entanglement, to solve problems that cannot be solved using classical computers. Quantum computing is particularly suitable as a research tool and development of new solutions for a wide range of problems.

The IBM Quantum team and LG people are exploring ways in which quantum computing might help a variety of industries and disciplines, including finance, energy, chemistry, materials science, optimization and machine learning.

According to Kim Byoung-hoon, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President ofLG Electronics , “Based on our open innovation strategy, we plan to use IBM Quantum to develop our capabilities in quantum computing. We aim to provide customers with value that they have not experienced until now, by leveraging quantum computing technology in future businesses."

Jay Gambetta, VP of quantum computing at IBM said that "We are pleased to welcome LG Electronics to the growing quantum computing ecosystem in Korea at an exciting time for the region. The relationship between IBM and LG Electronics will allow LG to explore new types of problems related to emerging technologies and help strengthen quantum capabilities in Korea."
