The Lottery has announced the winners of the Landau Science Lottery Awards for 2018. The prize is being awarded for the 18th year and is divided into the field of arts and the field of science and research. This year, four winners were chosen from the field of science. Each of the winners will be awarded a cash prize of NIS 150 in a festive ceremony that will take place at the end of the year.

The Landau Science Lottery Prize is awarded to scientific researchers who have achieved meritorious achievements in their field and made a valuable contribution to the advancement of science and research. The winners of the Landau Science Lottery Prize for 2018 are: Prof. Ofira Ilon in the field of sustainability research (University of Haifa and the Shmuel Na'man Institute at the Technion), Prof. Eran Alinev in the field of immunology research (Weizmann Institute of Science), Prof. Itamar Gathi in the field of education research (University Hebrew), Prof. Yoram Yom Tov in the field of zoological research (Tel Aviv University).

Prof. Ofira Elon in the field of sustainability research. The names of the judges: Prof. Gadi Kapeluto, Prof. Giora Shabiv, Prof. Motti Schechter.

The field of sustainability is a cardinal field for our continued existence on earth. The field consists of a huge variety of disciplines in which each contribution adds a layer to establishing our existence and the existence of future generations.
Therefore, the committee examined the variety of contributions of each candidate across the range of issues related to sustainability and found that the selected candidate made significant contributions across a wide scale of issues related to issues related to Israel and issues related to global problems. In general, the committee reached the decision to award the Landau Prize for Sciences in the field of sustainability to Prof. Ofira Elon.

Prof. Eran Alinev in the field of immunology research. The names of the judges: Prof. Itai Benhar, Prof. Mira Barda Saad and Prof. Dan Parr.
Prof. Eran Alinev is a groundbreaking scientist who in a few years left his mark on the field of immunology in Israel and around the world. His research focuses on the interrelationship between the bacteria that inhabit the digestive system (the microbiome) and their host. Prof. Alinev has an international reputation in this field, as evidenced by the number and quality of his scientific publications published in the most prestigious journals. Prof. Alinev and his group have reported in recent years on the existence of close connections between the composition and timing of the human diet and the composition and function of the intestinal bacteria and the relationship between these and the function of the innate immune system.

Prof. Itamar Gethi in the field of education research. The names of the judges: Prof. Tali Heyman, Prof. Tami Ronen Rosenbaum and Prof. Miri Sharaf.

Prof. Itamar Gethi is a prolific and creative researcher and a recognized leading leader in Israel and the world in the field of career counseling for teenagers and young adults, who combines theory, research and application in his work. His many studies focused on young people from different cultures and at different developmental stages and were published in leading journals in the field of counseling and career. Prof. Gatti's research contribution has applications to everyday life - he developed a website that is widely used and helps young people in making decisions. The tools he developed have been translated into many languages ​​and make it possible to locate the sources of difficulties in choosing a career/studies and to examine how to deal with them.

Prof. Yoram Yom Tov in the field of zoology. The names of the judges: Prof. Amos Buskila, Dr. Guy Bloch and Dr. Frieda Ben Ami
Prof. Yoram Yom Tov is a multidisciplinary zoologist, educator and leader in public activities for nature conservation. His research combines field work, laboratory and intelligent use of zoological collections and the abundant information contained in them. The many and varied research subjects of Prof. Yom Tov are an example and a model for zoological research in Israel. They covered a wide range of topics such as relationships between animals and their environment, bird migration, reproduction, intersexual and intrasexual parasitism in birds, factors affecting body size, plant and animal relationships, behavioral ecology, macroecology, zoogeography, biology of land species Israelis and agriculture and nature conservation.
