280 Israeli researchers have so far won projects under the seventh R&D plan

At an official event that will take place today, Tuesday, October 25.10.2011, 280, under the auspices of the EU Ambassador to Israel Andrew Standley, and the CEO of ISERD Marcel Staun, tokens of appreciation will be awarded to XNUMX Israeli entities that won research grants in the past year. The winning Israeli entities take part in projects worth millions of Euros each. The projects are Israeli-European collaborations, some of them even initiated by Israel and led by industrial and academic bodies from Israel.

The 280 Israeli winners take part in projects whose total value reaches over one billion euros, while the amount of the research grants for the Israeli winners is 115 million euros.

Israel is the only country outside of Europe that participates in the program as a society with equal rights. Israel benefits from exposure to European research and industry, access to knowledge worth billions of Euros and close familiarity with the methods and work culture of the European Union - Israel's largest trading partner.

Ambassador Standley said that the intention of the Commission is that the budget of the next framework program Horizon 2020 will be significantly higher than the budget of the current program and will amount to 80 billion € (Euro). The ambassador noted: "The joint Israeli-European work in the field of research is beneficial to society and the economy of both parties. This is a model for the kind of close relationships we would like to see in other areas in the future."

Below are some examples of projects in which Israeli officials participate:
• Compadia and Bar Ilan University are partners in a project in the field of information technologies that deals with the development of an Internet environment for children with autism for the purpose of integrating them into society.
• Anime Scan company together with MTAH (the Center for Educational Technology) is a partner in a project in the field of information technologies that develops a distance learning portal for people with dyslexia, for the purpose of their integration into society.
• Nice company is leading a project together with Bar Ilan University in the field of LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGIES
• Radwizen and IBM Israel are partners in a project in the field of NETWORKED MEDIA
• Mellanox is a partner in a project in the field of COMPUTING SYSTEMS
• Phenom Networks is a partner in a project dealing with the analysis of phenotypic traits of plants relative to their environment. The project will promote an understanding of the relationship between phenotype, genotype and plant physiology traits. The project's products will be used to promote research in academia and in the plant cultivation and breeding industry.
• Souraski Medical Center is a partner in a project in the field of creation that deals with virtual reality - a walker that improves mobility and prevents falls among the elderly.
• Volcani Institute is a partner in a project that deals with innovative approaches to improve the quality of fresh food.
• The Technion is a partner in a project investigating the ecology of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
• Haifa University leads a project in which Ben-Gurion University and Beacon-Tech are also partners. The project is in the field of information technologies and deals with the development of a guidance system for monitoring patients outside of medical settings.
• General Motors Israel received funding to repatriate an Israeli researcher from the US for the purpose of integrating him into the company's research unit.
• Yad Vashem participates in a project dealing with building a digital library of Holocaust documents from museums and archives in Europe.

The seventh framework program is spread over seven years 2007-2013 and its total budget is about €50 billion.
The Framework Program for Research and Development of the European Union was founded in 1984 with the intention of increasing European competitiveness in the fields of research and development. Israel is the only country outside of Europe that takes part in these programs as a society with equal rights.

ISERD is the Israeli administration for the framework program for research and development of the European Union and operates from the Office of the Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Science and Technology.
