Does a dead star preparing for a supernova explosion threaten Earth? Astronomers say "maybe"

In any case, the star, one of the members of the binary system WR104 will now be tracked

Australian astronomers from the University of Sydney have investigated an intergalactic assassin that might wipe out life on Earth. Observations show that the rare object WR104, located about 8,000 light years from here, could be a potential killer - and we are the victim.

What makes the binary star system WR104 unique is that it is a blue star orbiting the star Wolf Wright 104. A Wolf Wright type star is like a ticking bomb warning light that has arrived on the countdown to the last second before the explosion. It's a star that has used up its energy and is now preparing for one last supernova explosion. At this point, the fusion reactions in the star cause its photosphere layer to be thrown out into space, and its partner, the blue star, illuminates the ejected material, giving the entire system the appearance of an impressive spiral vane that spans twice the size of the solar system.

KdHA is at an angle of 16 degrees from the axis of rotation of the intergalactic vane, and this can be a cause for concern, since during the supernova eruption of such binary systems, massive jets of gamma rays are sometimes emitted from the poles of the axis of rotation as the star collapses in on itself. Gamma rays are electromagnetic waves of such high energy that a supernova explosion that lasts less than two minutes can contain more energy than our sun produces in all its years of existence.

Gamma-ray burst jets are so energetic that we can clearly see them across the universe, and if one passes too close the result can be disastrous. However, the gamma rays are "narrow" so the blast must be aimed exactly at the target to inflict damage. The chances of us being directly in front of WR104's crosshairs are slim but possible.

How will all this affect KDA? According to models that simulate the scenario of the supernova eruption and a direct impact, WR104 if and when it erupts, will fly electromagnetic rays at the speed of light so that we cannot anticipate it and prepare, it will simply hit us. First, the explosion will be bright, it is not known how bright since this is a characteristic that varies from star to star. Another thing that will happen is an immediate damage to the atmosphere like that which will reduce the ozone layer by 30% globally, and 50% at the place of the damage. It will take years for the ozone to recover from the damage.

The jet will break down the nitrogen molecules in the air and in their place, molecules of nitrogen dioxide will be created, or in other words, smog that will cover the earth and block the sun's rays. The cosmic rays will blast subatomic particles into the air and create new particles called muons. The earth will cool and the nitrogen dioxide will cause acid rain.

The worst scenario is a mass extinction, and the best scenario is that nothing happens, so the range of possible options is wide.

There are too many parameters and great uncertainty about the details, so no one knows what will happen. What's more, the scientists reassure that you can go to sleep in peace because the likelihood of actual damage is very small. In any case, you should keep an eye on the area.

  1. Yael, thank you very much for the excellent article.
I just want to express a position of a certain protest about the responses that create an atmosphere here that is simply unscientific and disrespectful towards you as a person and as a colleague of study and knowledge. I strongly object to references to you and your personal life. Then are you surprised that women (including the best minds) are reluctant to come in the midst of the scientific world? Enough of that.

  2. Yael, what do you think, why is it that there are not enough girls in the fields of science and engineering?
Is the system to blame, or is the culture (marriage) to blame, or is it genetic characteristics.

    ?

  3. Thanks to Jonathan, thanks to him I was able to watch the broadcast in question (unfortunately this is only the last episode, so I didn't see the episode in which Roy participated).

I understood where the enthusiasm you are talking about came from, Yael 🙂 Although I am sure, also according to the program and the articles and comments on the site, that beauty is not your only virtue. Good luck in furthering your science and career.

  4. Yael,
So if you are successful in all respects then I would like to congratulate you 🙂
By the way, I asked you before - may I know what your academic background is? in which field?
    Just curiosity...

  5. Whoever said HYPE was probably right;
The Chinese saw the supernova of the Cancer Nebula in a thousand or so AD (6,300 light years), and Tycho saw a supernova 7,500 away in the 17th century. The ozone remains intact and here we are to read about it.

Eta Carnia is also going to explode sometime soon, and one astronomer said that at night it would be possible to read a book by its light, and during the day to see it as a pale moon. Here, too, we are being predicted quite a cataclysm.

And what about some asteroid/comet, the slightest deviation in its angle will send it flying straight at us and crush us all out of shape?

We can go on like this for a long time...

  6. Pine,

Listen, I would have preferred to be judged first as a physicist or as a reporter before being judged as a girl, but well, if we have come to that, then maybe all the means that will help promote science in Israel (and women in science) are valid.

The topic I was talking about was the topic of this article.

  7. Yael,

The inequality hurts me a little, but on the other hand, I'm glad that I don't get such offers from men.
In any case, I wish you many more successful performances in the show!

    Pine,

I explained about the explanation that a certain nerve toxin (tetrodotoxin) was used by Haitian idol doctors to create zombies. It was possible to find the episode online the week after the broadcast, but I can't find a link to it at the moment.

  8. By the way, what was the program about in the episode you hosted?
    Same question to you Roy.

Are there any existing links to watch?

  9. Yael Peter,
I didn't see you in the lab, since I don't have a TV in my apartment. But I'm pretty sure you were a "resounding success" as they say.

And I'm pretty sure it "reassures" you that you have fans like Jonathan who "have a strong hold on you" 🙂 As they say, fame has a price.

Indeed, you finally found a place where they prefer a female scientist and not a male scientist... outside the academy (and I know that some professors within the academy) discriminate against female engineers and those with higher degrees compared to engineers (not that I'm so against it, it works in my favor 🙂 ). Good luck in show business. and break a leg.

  10. Roy,
If you were a girl, you would also receive such reactions.

    Jonathan,
    Thanks I guess.

  11. Great (!0'T

I just saw your performance in the lab.

The words fell out of my mouth.
I was just sorry to hear that you "slept well at night". This is something that shouldn't normally happen to a girl like you.

Even though I'm very busy, I have no problem disturbing your sleep from time to time.
Of course with your permission and after prior arrangement.

  12. A. Ben-Ner,

Wolf right, or wolf vision, as it is called in Wikipedia, is a developmental stage of stars of a certain type. This is the last cry of the star before his death. This happens after it uses up its energy, and before it collapses in on itself and explodes as a supernova.
Due to all sorts of complicated processes, the star's core collapses inward while the star's solar wind blows out the mantle layers.

  13. rationalize
Perhaps you could briefly explain what are the main characteristics of the "Wolf-Rite" star?

  14. Maybe it's star X (or whatever it's called) from the prophecy of Bnei Mia and that's why the (global) warming. Awww…….

  15. Laliko
Theoretically - the whole world can disappear and appear intact on the other side of the universe. That doesn't mean it will actually happen.

  16. Eyal. A,
No. There is no mechanism that always happens in the same way. This is probably related to the chemical composition of the star as well as its age. According to what is written in one of the sources (given below), the supernova may produce the gamma jets, and this may harm us. It is also written there that the star in question is young, so it may not go through the entire process of the inner core collapsing into a black hole and the outer shell exploding outwards and then (as a result of a complex process) the distribution of the two jets.

    Meyer,
    Maybe "intragalactic" instead of "intergalactic".

  17. Is WR104 on the milky way?
Why is the vane "intergalactic"? Can the beam cross intergalactic distances?

  18. For someone over 21:
I also read and understood that, thanks. I asked if there is an estimate regarding the duration of the burst of the gamma rays regarding this specific case (if at all there are different durations for different cases).

  19. Response to Eyal's question from comment 14 -

From the article "A supernova explosion that lasts less than two minutes can contain more energy than our sun produces in all its years of existence"

  20. Thanks for the article,

First, I wonder if you have already watched a similar event or is this the first time? If not this time
The first is that it is possible to observe the progress of the gamma rays and perhaps even calculate their speed
    precisely.
Second, if this explosion does happen, and the gamma rays will indeed be collected into a focused beam, as opposed to an eruption
Equal in all directions, so there will be enough time to observe the fund's progress and calculate its course
along with a number of possible deviations. This means that even if it moves towards us as a point,
Driving at the speed of light, the enormous energy it will carry with it will be visible
Any telescope with gamma filters, and even if there is no such animal yet, it is not far today that it will be possible.

So what is the hysteria here actually (apart from the matter of the RATING)?
I would be happy to see healthy and wholesome people here for another 8,000 years, because there are dangers
Much more tangible and real than supernovas that actually put us on the cross.

    We will wait and see……

  21. Yes Dan, of course. The governments are so stupid that you can throw some nonsense at them and straight up they pour billions into the space agencies. You watch too many movies.

  22. First, not scenarios but scenarios.
    And why not a scenario?

Second, what does "open an eye" mean? One can think that something can be done.
To the same extent, you can go to the beach, bungee jump, or just recite beads in Sankrist. It will be just as effective as watching and keeping an eye on the next supernova.

Thirdly, maybe the reason why intelligent life has not been discovered yet... until they develop means of communication, computers, interstellar spaceships, etc. - they are destroyed by some nearby supernova, and the novel is not enough to develop.

  23. Beautifully written but jarring when foreign words are used where there are excellent words in Hebrew.

  24. Is there a way to defend against a supernova mass extinction?
Is it possible to create supernova shields in space close to the Earth that will shade it from the radiation of the supernova?

  25. For Shabbat keeper
That's all well and good but I don't understand why it has anything to do with this forum.

  26. Shumer Shabbat is a well-known troll in the forums. Trying to create a provocation between religious and secular.

  27. BSD
Leave you astronomers, science and all this regret,
The Lithuanian world will bless our lives!!
Today, Sunday, the XNUMXrd of the XNUMXth of December, a historic and exciting event will be held in which they will announce the re-opening of the Novhardok Yeshiva. Rabbi Avraham Brock will participate in the conference, the head of the Hebron yeshiva Rabbi David Cohen and the head of the Yad Aharon yeshiva Rabbi Yehoshua Eichenstein.

  28. Believe it or not, there is hype in science too.
From time to time you have to justify the huge budgets,
who go to this type of research and therefore publish here and there
And literally little by little these kinds of occurrences have their whole function
He arouses curiosity, maybe even a little scary and in this way
preserving the need for these studies, which by the way are really important,
But it is better not to be afraid and not to worry - everything will be fine.

    Happy holiday.

  29. Ami,
If the eruption occurred a thousand years ago, the early signs would only reach us in 7000 years - everything moves at the same speed, so the time between the warning signs and the impact is the time difference when they start. Probably not for too long...

On the other hand, according to the original news, the eruption could also occur hundreds or thousands of years after the aforementioned warning sign, or could (would?) occur without gamma radiation at all, so that everything is still open (as stated in Rabbi Uri Zohar's Bible quiz skit, Eric Einstein and Zvi Schissel...).

  30. It was probably said firecrackers and thunder... very interesting. Another fascinating list by Yael
    Thanks

  31. If you calculate how much "Nostradamus" is in gematria and use the number that comes out in order to skip letters in the Torah, you get the sentence "How much is six times nine", which of course means that in 42 days the radiation will hit us

  32. The supernova in question may have erupted already about a thousand years ago, but since it is 8,000 light years away from us, the destructive radiation from it will reach us in 7,000 years and even then we will see the eruption; And if it erupted long before that, say nearly 8,000 years ago and the destructive radiation will reach us in about three years in 2012... literally the end of the world...
