The International Space University (ISU) has announced that the 29th annual semester of the Space Studies Program (SSP) will be held at the Technion in Haifa from July 2 to September 4, 2016. The date is subject to final approval. This is the first time that the prestigious course will be held in Israel in particular and in the Middle East in general.

"ISU maintains a long-standing relationship with Israel in general and with the Technion in particular. Many of the Israeli participants were able, partly thanks to the Ilan Ramon Foundation, to participate in previous ISU courses. That is why it is a great joy to tighten this relationship and hold the 2016 course in Haifa. It is clear as day that many countries will show great interest in the impressive high-tech achievements and cultural diversity at the Technion and in Israel," declared Professor Walter Peters, ISU president.

Technion President Professor Peretz Lavi said that "The Technion is proud to host in Haifa the 29th annual course of the Space Studies Program (SSP). The Technion is one of the first universities to launch a satellite into space, and we have an active space program. We will make sure to make the 29th course an exciting event, which will allow participants to directly experience the Technion's scientific achievements and the beauty and culture of the State of Israel."

The SSP courses are nine-week events that offer participants an extensive and unique professional development experience, covering all aspects of space programs and initiatives. Among the areas emphasized in these courses: business and management in the field of space; space and humanities; space applications; and human performance in space. The program is aimed at seasoned and young professionals from all fields, as well as post-doctoral students. The group projects allow participants to focus on their field as a team, as well as produce high-quality presentations and reports within a few weeks. Every summer SSP courses are held somewhere else in the world. The last courses were held in Graz, Vancouver, NASA's Ames Center, Beijing and Melbourne (Florida). This year the SSP course will be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in collaboration with ETS and HEC.

"We are happy to bring SSP16 to Israel, and actually for the first time to the Middle East. The Technion is known for its top-notch infrastructure and beautiful campus. Haifa is an excellent place to deliver our unique, interdisciplinary, international and intercultural program," added Dr. Angie Buckley, ISU dean.

The International Space University, founded in 1987 in Massachusetts, USA, and currently operating from Strasbourg, France, is the leading international institution for space education. It is supported by space agencies and large organizations from around the world. The graduate programs offered by ISU are dedicated to the promotion of international, interdisciplinary and international cooperation in the field of space. ISU offers a master's degree in space studies and a master's degree in space management at its main campus in Strasbourg. Since the summer of 1988, ISU has held nine-week courses at various host institutions around the world. These courses are taught by more than a hundred ISU faculty members in collaboration with experts from around the world. Since its founding 25 years ago, ISU has awarded advanced degrees to more than 3,700 students from more than a hundred countries.

The Asher Center for Space Research, headed by Professor Ehud Bacher, was established in 1984. Professor Bacher said that preparations for the important event will begin soon, in collaboration with the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Technion's International School.
