IBM today unveiled the world's fastest computer chip. The new processor, operating at a speed of 5.2 GHz, integrates 4 processing cores and will be the engine in IBM's new mainframe computers designed to handle large amounts of processing movements in a business-commercial environment.

More than 30 engineers and researchers at IBM's research laboratory in Haifa and IBM's systems and technology development laboratory in Tel Aviv were partners in the development of the world's fastest processor - the z196, which, as mentioned, will be the heart of the system of the new zEnterprise mainframe that IBM will provide to customers starting on September 10 .

Calculation units and memory arrays in the processor core were developed by teams in the IBM development laboratory in Israel and engineers in the research laboratory developed verification tools, were partners in verifying the design and helped improve the reliability of the software layer that is at the heart of the system. It should be noted that this processor was developed and manufactured with silicon technology unique to IBM, which enables the fastest calculation rates in the world

IBM's zEnterprise mainframe computing technology is the result of an investment of more than 1.5 billion dollars in research and development, and three years of cooperation with major IBM customers all over the world, who presented their requirements to the company.

As mentioned, the new z196 processor integrates four processing cores, and a total of 1.4 billion transistors compressed over an area of 512 square millimeters. The chip is manufactured at the IBM factories in East Fishkill, New York, using silicon technology on a 45 nanometer insulator, on silicon wafers with a diameter of 300 mm.

Breaking speed and performance records is required for businesses dealing with heavy workloads, such as banks and retail chains, in an era where the world is becoming more connected, the amounts of data are growing beyond the storage capacity that was sufficient in the past, and the amounts of business transactions are skyrocketing. Thus, for example, a study by the Berg company predicts that the number of customers of online banking services for mobile end users will increase from 55 million in 2009 to 894 million in 2015. These trends create a need for innovation in systems designed to deal with and help customers take advantage of changes in the market and present services based on new business models.

The IBM zEnterprise system using the new chip is IBM's most powerful commercial server of all time. The core server of the system, zEnterprise 196, includes 96 z196 processors, the world's fastest and most powerful available on the market. Together, these processors are capable of handling more than 50 billion instructions per second. For the sake of comparison, we note that this processing capacity is 17,000 times higher than that of a model 91 central server, which IBM offered in 1970 as the top end model in its family of systems.

IBM's new microprocessor technology is also accompanied by new software that guarantees performance optimization under heavy workloads, including a 60% improvement in processing data-intensive tasks and workloads in the Java environment. The improvement in performance also leads to savings in software licensing costs, which in many cases are based on the number of cores used: the more each core is able to handle larger amounts of data, the fewer licenses are required to perform a given volume of work.

The new system offers 60% higher processing capacity compared to its predecessor, System z10, while consuming the same amount of power. Efficiency in energy consumption is achieved through advanced design of the chip, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) manufacturing technology, unique functions for energy conservation and dissipation, as well as firmware systems for temperature sensors and control of the cooling systems. These systems know how to adjust the cooling level to the load in which the computer is operating, to the conditions of temperature, humidity and air density.

  1. I just wanted to clarify that all the commenters who responded before (including those who didn't) are not me.

  2. All the rants here are asked to calm down, and that includes you commenter 8, you don't sound better than those you comment to.

  3. To read the comments that appear above, I can only say: Shame on you all! Taking advantage of a stage like "Hidan" to come down on each other and even curse each other, clearly infantile reactions!
Comments that are irrelevant, and shame me, and I think - others too, who are forced to read words written by obvious ego patients! It would have been better, for the sake of the site and the respect of the non-aggressive readers, if you had kept this disgust you spewed at home. I, at least, am totally not interested in swimming in this swamp!

  4. jerk, jerk,
And you don't know what I developed and what I didn't? It is certainly easy to sit at home in front of a keyboard like a small child, I see that you are speaking from experience, because the level of reasoning and logical reasoning in your responses is certainly compatible with this age group. Such direct surfing to personal lines as you demonstrated in the previous message teaches more about you than anything I will write to you in response.

  5. Adi Adi, an inflated egotist like you, where have you been until today?? Why didn't you develop such technologies for humanity? In the end, both you and I will benefit from the technologies in question here, scientific developments and research that will be done with the help of this computer and accompanying technologies will contribute to many areas of life, starting with advanced medicine and a thousand and one other areas, this is what history proves. How easy it is to sit at home like a little child in front of the keyboard and write nonsense on the Internet, to underestimate the hard and important work that people do, and it doesn't matter at all how much money they earn or how much they enjoy or suffer from what they do. What is important is that they contribute to society probably much more than you and people like you who have their noses stuck in the ceiling. In my opinion, you are a stupid person, go watch another episode of the survival show that suits you.

  6. Boy Oh Boy!
    shame! A real shame! disgrace!
These people work for their own pleasure, not voluntarily, for a very good salary, they receive excellent living conditions for it (from experience), and they certainly don't do it for me or for humanity, so no one owes anyone a thank you here.
And as for technological progress, I repeat again, this is a nice achievement, a step in the direction the river flows, but nothing groundbreaking. And that you don't understand anything in the field should have made you sit still and shut up into a little rag. Instead, you are quoting stupid slogans here.

  7. This is an amazing technological advance!

"Together, these processors are capable of handling more than 50 billion commands per second... a 60% improvement in processing data-intensive tasks... the new system offers 60% higher processing capacity compared to its predecessor, System z10, while consuming the same amount of power..."

What is this contempt of yours?

Be thankful that there are people in the world (and in Israel as well) who work very hard to develop such amazing things for you and for humanity.

    The singularity is near!!

    Prude.

  8. Not very impressive. Very interesting if I had to buy a powerful server, but impressive it is not. Another tiny step in the direction where everyone walks safely.
Just as no one would be particularly thrilled if someone set a new record for consecutive hot dog eating at 1597 hot dogs, when the previous record was 1561 hot dogs. Nice, but nothing more.
