SRII (Service Research Innovation Institute) awarded first prize to a joint project by IBM, the Technion and the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, to improve the medical service provided to patients.

The award was given for "the most successful collaboration between industry, academia and the government, as reflected in this project".
Students and researchers at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, together with researchers from the IBM Research Laboratory in Haifa and researchers at the Rambam Hospital, began about two years ago, in an unprecedented collaboration, to carry out the first phase of the project - observations, measurements, collection and data analysis at Rambam Hospital. This phase led to basic and applied multidisciplinary research, and the development of tools based on this research, which will enable close follow-up and accompaniment of the patients beginning in the process of their admission in the emergency room and throughout their hospitalization in the hospital. The monitoring will allow the mobility and placement of various resources (doctors, nurses, laboratory workers, auxiliary force) in an optimal way. This will also save a lot of time and shorten queues for the patients who will receive adequate and fast medical service.

In future stages of the research, the intention is to continue developing various tools that combine advanced information technologies, statistical methods, performance research models and human factors engineering, in a way that will lead to an overall improvement in the medical service system. The existence of strong research groups in each of these fields in the Faculty of Information Engineering at the Technion was a key to the success of the project, since the challenges involved in providing an advanced and high-quality medical service require a systemic approach and a combination of methodologies originating from the various fields to achieve the overall goal. The connection with the IBM laboratory brought to the project the forefront of knowledge in the various fields of information technologies and their uses, and finally, without the close cooperation with Rambam's medical staff (doctors, auxiliary nurses and administrators) who brought with them a unique load of knowledge and experience, the project would not have been successful.

This is a unique project born out of meetings held between the Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management at the Technion, Professor Boaz Golani, and the director of the Rambam Hospital, Professor Rafi Biar, and several vice presidents of the IBM company who visited Israel and the director of the IBM research laboratory in Haifa, Mr. Oded Cohen. The IBM company wishes to promote a new field of research which it calls Service Science, Management & Engineering (SSME) and the Faculty of IT Engineering wishes to promote the field of service systems engineering in which it has created a great reputation for itself in the world. Both sides identified the field of medical service as a topic of enormous importance in which they have an interest in acting together. At the same time, several meetings were held with the director of the Rambam Medical Center, Professor Rafi Biar, who expressed great interest in promoting research in the field and suggested holding it in several departments of the hospital. All of these led to a cooperation agreement signed between the Technion and IBM.

As part of the agreement, IBM made a significant donation to the faculty that enabled the start of the research. The joint project is, in fact, IBM's contribution to the community, as the results of the joint research will be made available to patients and doctors, without profit.
The SRII award aims to highlight the activity of individuals, institutions, organizations and academia worldwide, in research and innovation in the field of service processes and at the same time to spread and preserve the scientific knowledge acquired during the research.

"The Rambam Medical Center, the Technion and the IBM Research Laboratory in Haifa were able to realize cooperation between industry, academia and the government, and bring innovative ideas and methods to fruition," said Denise Wilmil, SRII's vice president.

The second and third places, after the Israeli group, went to the Gaylord hotel chain and the University of Central Florida and the Xerox company with the Rochester Institute of Technology. The awards were distributed at the largest gathering of technology service organizations (Technology Services World) TSW held in Silicon Valley, California. This is the first awards program of its kind by the SRII organization and winning first place among dozens of multidisciplinary teams from different parts of the world that competed for it is another achievement for the research and development carried out in Israel.

  1. By the way, I forgot to say that the engineering degrees are BSc and are at least 4 years.

  2. Moran,
There is no "engineering" faculty at the Technion.
There are 3-year BA degrees that are for "pure" science subjects - such as the faculties of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, etc.
And all the rest (most of the other faculties) are various degrees of engineering: materials engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, aeronautical engineering and more.
And also the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management. What the other engineering faculties call it: "Practical and Excursion Faculty" 🙂 It emphasizes the more high-tech and engineering aspect of the industry and gives a certain background in science beyond economics. Like computers, some physics and even one course in chemistry and more.

  3. Well done, yes they will!

And by the way, does the Technion have an entire faculty for industrial engineering and management?
Isn't this a department within the Faculty of Engineering?
