ALS patients are offering a $3.5 million reward to whoever finds a way to develop a cure for their disease

The Israels association, which brings together the muscular dystrophy patients in Israel, has decided to award a cash prize of 3.5 million dollars to any researcher, doctor or other person who develops a tool for diagnosing the disease or finding a cure for the disease.

Despite the significant medical progress in the last century, the muscular dystrophy ALS remains a "black hole": no one knows what causes its outbreak in healthy people and no cure has yet been found. Due to its rarity, research bodies and pharmaceutical companies have not invested in researching the disease, since it is not economically profitable compared to other "massive" diseases.

ALS is a fatal and rare disease - in Israel there are 500-600 patients with the disease. Their average lifespan after the onset of the disease is 2-4 years, during which they gradually lose the ability to move their body parts, the ability to speak and the ability to breathe independently.

David Cohen, a businessman from Haifa who contracted the disease, decided that muscular dystrophy patients should take their fate into their own hands and lead the effort to find a cure. According to his perception, as in many other places, money is what drives the wheels of the system, therefore obtaining funding for research and promising a large amount of money to those who succeed in researching the disease will lead to the long-awaited breakthrough. David Cohen founded the Israels association, which is involved in raising funds for the research of the disease.

The "Prize for Life" project, under which 3.5 million dollars will be given to the developer of the diagnostic tool or the cure for the disease, was the initiative of Avihai Kramer, who learned of his illness while studying business administration at Harvard University in Boston. Although the disease is already impairing his ability to move, he decided to continue his studies and at the same time started an activity to harness the major pharmaceutical companies and research bodies in the United States to study the disease. For this activity he won the Dean's Award of the Harvard Business School and an article about him was published in the business newspaper "Wall Street Journal".

ALS patients have no doubt that sooner or later a cure will be found for the disease, even if they personally will not benefit from the fruits of their struggle, the cure will benefit future generations of patients. Information about the activities of the Israels association on the website:
