Scientists at the Geneva-based particle accelerator (LHC) say they have discovered a new particle that behaves in a manner consistent with long-awaited predictions of the Higgs boson's activity.

The particle has been sought for 45 years and is supposed to explain how matter has mass. CMS - one of the two experiments looking for the Higgs at different sites of the particle accelerator in Geneva have reached a level of certainty that allows the confirmation of the discovery.

Later, the scientists of the Atlas experiment, in which a number of academic institutions from Israel also participate, will give their point of view.

The Standard Model successfully describes all the elementary particles we know and how they interact. However, our understanding of nature is not perfect. In particular, the standard model cannot answer the basic question: why do most elementary particles have mass?

Without Se the universe would be a very different place. For example, if the electron had no mass there would be no atoms. Therefore there was no matter as we know it. Not chemistry, not biology, not humans. In addition, the sun shines thanks to the subtle interplay between the elemental forces in nature, which would be different if they did not have large masses.

At first glance, the concept of mass does not fit the standard model of particle physics. Two of the forces described in the model - electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force can be described in one theory, the electro-weak force. The scientists were able to prove this in many experiments, but the simple equations of the theory require that all elementary particles be massless.

The scientists must find a way out of this maze. Several scientists, including Peter Higgs discovered the mechanism that if added to the equation allows particles to gain mass. It is now known as the Higgs mechanism. Incorporating it into the Standard Model makes it easier for scientists to make predictions about several quantities, including the mass of the heaviest known particle, the top quark.

The scientists found that the valence of all particles fits the predictions of the Higgs equation.

According to the theory, the Higgs boson acts as a mediator that exists everywhere in space. The particles gain mass through interaction with this medium.

Peter Higgs pointed out that the mechanism requires the existence of an invisible particle, which we now call the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson is the component of the Higgs medium, just as the photon is the basic component of light.

The Higgs boson is the only particle predicted by the standard model that has not yet been seen experimentally. The Higgs mechanism does not predict the mass of the Higgs boson itself but rather a range of masses. Fortunately, it may leave a footprint that depends on its mass so that scientists can know where to look for it and calculate its mass from the particles that are created from its decay and that can be seen in the accelerator detector.

  1. I don't understand anything,
If it is the particle that gives mass to the other particles, how exactly do you try to find its own mass?

  2. Indeed, the American fundamentalists also kill murderers. The deadliest religion is the NRA. Its people shamelessly take over decision-making centers and prevent any restrictions on the use of weapons.

  3. 70 years ago they murdered on the basis of race theory. which also took hold due to economic hardship, and not as someone who looks narrowly would claim - religion.

If there is no God, morality is a product of religion and interests, without it there will be destruction. Even in the USA there is a variety of beliefs and religions, why don't we kill each other? Because of enforcement organizations? In the order of magnitude of a social situation and processes, one must look at the overall reasons, and not individual motives. As for example economic situation and lack of energy and basic resources.

If we reach a situation where people think that fate is completely predetermined, and there is no good and bad, pure rationality, there will be chaos.

In any case, we have deviated greatly from the subject [=

  4. When people stopped believing in themselves they started believing in God...
In any case, regarding Africa, as someone who has a family name and business, I can tell you that the main thing that they are killing each other there is because of religious conflicts that have been going on for hundreds of years already... but all this is dwarfed, compared to the achievement published today.

  5. There is a difference between, "If they stop murdering people there, Africa will start moving forward", and "If we invest in research to develop cheap and alternative energies, we will make them stop murdering, and move forward".

They don't kill because of religion, they kill because of economic hardship. They have no possibility to utilize resources, because of the existing situation.

If there is no God, religion has set the norm of morality. And that's why you don't murder your neighbors now. Because of him they fought the Nazis. It is not religion that causes failure, but ignorance, stupidity and extremism.

We are all human, saying "if" will not change a situation - cyclical result and reaction, but thinking outside the box and action.

The world fails because of those who do nothing, not because of those who do evil.

  6. Just one,
I'm with you on this one. If there is anything that will solve Africa's problems, it is finding cheap and alternative energies. The hope for this comes only from intensive research which is naturally expensive, but will eventually pay for itself with compound interest. This is called investment in Hebrew.
I agree that with the necessary caution this is a historical holiday for every seeker of science and progress wherever he is.
    for life!!

  7. To all Africa lovers of all kinds... Africa has greater resources than all the countries of the world, if they stop murdering each other due to religious differences... Yes, religion is the reason why there is hunger, poverty and unspeakable crimes in Africa... Africa will be one of the strongest economies in the world... and our point:
As a scientist, I can say that I opened a bottle of 50-year-old whiskey that was bought the day it was decided to establish the accelerator for the purpose of the search, I don't think that the particle is "divine", but rather the courage, determination and persistence of the scientists who studied this field for so many years, in their honor I raise a glass in salute And I say - good luck and all the best!!!
And I recommend everyone who has a glass of whiskey, wine, juice or water to stand and salute the team of scientists, today you are entitled to stand in the image of giants, 04.07.2012 will be a date for generations! So stop blathering on the net about the nonsense nonsense as a matter of religion, every person will believe what he wants even in the combination of nonsense such as this or that religion, but the absolute truth that was given to us today cannot be denied, so whoever says to all those who ask what is our profit, bow your heads because You are in the presence of giants who have gained immortality today!!! All of humanity has taken one step forward today!

  8. Avi,
I would expect a website administrator to maintain objectivity (in his responses), or at least moderate the severity of his answers...
After all, this is a misuse of your influence. And why is this unacceptable? Because the site does deal mainly with scientific fields, but it is not intended for an anti-religious readership and a balance must be maintained on the part of those who may be the dictates of opinion.
    further…
    Lesbarmish Yehuda,
I definitely agree with your opinion about the reason for the invention of religion...
However, this does not mean that religion is an invention, to show that there is no deity (of one kind or another).
And another small thing, the purpose that the state gives to both religion and its believers is at the base of democracy,
And it is the reason we can sit and talk about science (or philosophy), freely and openly, even if we don't always agree with what we hear or read.
    Anyway,
    Nice site.
    A fun day

  9. To a Jew and also to a Sabradish. I am not a religious person but I think that people are allowed to have a religion (if it is for the benefit of society). But religion is the bureaucracy of faith (in the bad sense) and today they deserve the result in all areas of society and therein lies the arrogance.

  10. What's stupid about disbelief, after all there are countless religions, and there is only one scientific truth, the chances are that because of the mechanism of science it is much closer to the objective truth than the 'truth' of any religion.

  11. to Yiddish
    You claim in your answer:-
"Science discusses the question of how the world was created. And religion in the question - why, what is its purpose" end quote.
This is of course your personal opinion only! The first verse in the book of Genesis: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth", this already contradicts your opinion. Here the religion also tries to explain how the world was created.
And to all those who try to explain religion and give it a place of honor next to/in place of science
I'm sorry, but my opinion is simple:- Religion was invented to take control of people with the help of scary stories about a higher power that only experts know its way, and therefore you have to listen to the voice of the experts. These experts are, of course, the rabbis, the fathers of the X-ray and the like, and many more who compete with each other.
It's a shame that the state gives them purpose.
Here, I too managed to be dragged into a debate about religion,
    (:))
So let's get rid of the religious trolls
    Good Day
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  12. Father, stupidity is the mother of arrogance. Be careful of both

  13. Father, I think your answer was a bit too harsh. Science deals with the question of how things happen when it assumes as a basic premise that things have no purpose. This assumption is the one that conflicts with religion in the classical sense of the word. (You can define "religion" as a code of conduct derived from inhuman laws and then science becomes part of religion).

  14. Yehuda, there is a new article published by the Weizmann Institute and there is an explanation. Also in this article (above) I translated an explanation from the CERN website.

  15. Sabdarmish Yehuda,
There is no contradiction between religion and science. And why would you be?

Science discusses the question of how the world was created. And religion in the question - why, what is its purpose

  16. Every scientific discovery makes religion redundant
    so
It is in the interest of the religious to divert the subject from any scientific thought and move it in the direction of religious thought. Instead of having an objective debate here, everything is directed towards religion and the like.
What needs to be done is to divert the comments that deal with religion to a religious parallel channel where the religious trolls can stew in their own juices.
    Avi Blizovsky
    For your judgment
    And about the said subject
Is it possible to get an idea of what the higgs boson is?, I understood that it is the one that gives the mass to the other particles of the universe(?), does it also give the dark mass its mass?
Or there is no connection between the two.
    Good Day
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  17. So you contribute to the poor of your nation but expect the world to take care of the poor of other nations, nice.

I'm not saying that we should be optimistic because of Higgs, I'm saying that the idea behind science is that we don't know when the research will have far-reaching results and when it will turn out to be a duck. If we knew then there would be no "research" (slight disruption of Einstein).

Meanwhile, this site has provided insights into antimatter (potential for ridiculously cheap energy), X-ray measurements more precise than ever before (I was at a lecture restoring lost works of art with this technology). In fact, most of the money that was "wasted" actually went to buy equipment, so that this project drove the world economy.

By the way, Israel does not directly participate in the project (according to Saran's website)

  18. It's always nice to read factual comments on scientific topics here.
Today is a holiday for all physics lovers, happy holiday!
    (and forward to the graviton)

  19. I do my best according to my abilities
I donate the surplus to each charity fund after I buy groceries at the store
I contribute to the poor of my people and expect the world to contribute to the poor of the world
If you claim that we will be optimistic about the Higgs particle, because of the Haber example
So I have no problem with us holding this discussion in 4 years from the point we left off and we'll see how many more billions of dollars will be spent for the project and what we got in return

  20. To Rabbi Nachman,
In order to feed the hungry in Africa, we need to "remove" some dictators from power there. And in the meantime, the United States does not intend to enter there to rule democracy. Maybe after they are done with Iraq and Afghanistan. Every effort to feed the hungry in Africa ended in tribal wars for power. A regime that wanted for itself everything that the West gives. By the way, if you care so much about the hungry in Africa, you can join one of the organizations that help there.
And as they wrote before, people in the world, indeed, engage in a lot of vanity, it's just interesting that everyone thinks that what they do is smart, and what the other does is unnecessary.

  21. You see the shadow of mountains as mountains!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Why are you wasting your time and money writing comments on the internet instead of feeding the hungry in Africa?
Why is the government busy building hospitals instead of feeding the hungry in Africa?
Why are the Kollelians busy studying Torah instead of feeding the hungry in Africa?
    And so on.

If we go back to the Haber example, 4 years passed from when it was introduced to when everything was in the industrial production of ammonia. And this is in a world without mass electronic communication.

  23. How many years will it take until we see something practical from the boson particle?
In the meantime, we would feed the hungry in Africa and build jobs there
And we prevent the influx of refugees from African countries to us, which only brings crime and difficult problems to deal with, including new epidemics that they carry with them as a result of the conditions in which they live.

  24. It leads there,
Bring it too bring it, how do you think you respond on a website? Partly because of this.

That's right... donate food to them.

  25. Rabbi Nachman, these efforts lead to nothing. right now
A hundred years ago (approximately) physicists wrestled with the question of the structure of the atom. Finally, the quantum theory was accepted. When this was accepted, engineers began to study the quantum principles and they built useful machines. One of these machines is called an MRI which is used for routine diagnosis of patients in all immigrants.
In a similar process, Fritz Haber discovered a mechanism that allows the creation of ammonia from the air and hence the path to fertilizers is short. This discovery of Havre tripled (!) the amount of food in Europe.

  26. I didn't understand where all this is leading us?
    All these efforts wasted nothing?
There are enough hungry people in Africa!!
