Professor Stephen Hawking landed in Israel on Thursday (December 7, 2006) for an eight-day visit, organized by the British Embassy in Israel. The world-renowned scientist and best-selling author of "A Brief History of Time" embodies British excellence in science. His visit will promote Britain as the preferred international partner when it comes to cooperation in the fields of science and technology.

Professor Hawking will meet with the flowers of science at an event organized by the British Council for Culture at the Bloomfield Science Museum in Jerusalem on Sunday, December 10. The event will be broadcast live on the website of British Council for Culture and on the website of British Embassy, as well as in YNET.

Also on Sunday Professor Hawking will meet with the Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert. In addition, Professor Hawking will speak in front of about 1,000 people at the Hebrew University on Thursday, December 14.

During his stay in Israel, Professor Hawking will visit the Weizmann Institute and Tel Aviv University, and he will meet with representatives of the Israel Academy of Sciences. Hawking will even lecture at Beer Zeit University in Ramallah and talk to Palestinian science students in East Jerusalem via video.

Last week Professor Hawking was awarded the highest distinction for scientific achievement for his work in cosmology and theoretical physics. The Copley Medal was first awarded in 1731 by the prestigious British Academy of Sciences (The Royal Society). "The long-term survival of the human race is in danger as long as it is confined to the confines of one planet," Hawking told the BBC last week. "Sooner or later disasters, such as an asteroid collision or a nuclear war, may wipe our existence off the face of the earth. However, if we spread into space and establish independent colonies, our future is guaranteed."

* As a representative of the science site I will attend the event at the Bloomfield Museum, but it is not possible to guarantee the possibility of an update from there, and therefore it is recommended to wait until the afternoon hours for updates on the homepage of the science site and in the science devoted to Hawking.

A: Does anyone have an extra card?
B: Despite Hawking's undoubted genius, I appreciate more people like our Jacob Beckstein who try to find more original solutions to explain the universe. It is not a great wisdom to continue to hold on to accepted things such as dark mass and black holes with the addition of the repulsive force of the void.
