A skull of an ape, considered the missing link in human evolution, has been restored

The fossilized remains were reconstructed into a complete skull by the study's editor, Prof. Yoel Rak, from the Department of Human Anatomy at the School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University.

The Adar region in Ethiopia is a gold mine for archaeologists who study human development. Excavations conducted in the area in 1978 revealed one of the most dramatic discoveries in the archeology of human evolution: remains of the famous skeleton of "Lucy", a female ape-man who lived 3.18 million years ago.

Lucy was an ape-man of the type Australopithecus afarensis, one of the ancient creatures that lived 3 to 3.6 million years ago, and is considered the missing link in the process of development from ape to man. Lucy's complete skull was never found, so scientists were left without the most important piece of the puzzle. But a long and comprehensive research work conducted in the same area led to the discovery of the sought-after find - skeletal remains, including a skull, of Benmina of Lucy.

The fossilized remains were reconstructed into a complete skull by the study's editor, Prof. Yoel Rak, from the Department of Human Anatomy at the School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. Other researchers provided analyzes of the creature's brain volume and dental system, which helped reconstruct the skull and infer its food menu. These days, a new book called "The Skull" was published in the United States, describing the details of this important discovery. The book, written by the Israeli scientist and his colleagues from the University of Arizona, Prof. William Kimball and Donald J. Henson, is undoubtedly the most in-depth and detailed document on the anatomy of that creature.

According to Prof. Reck, this knowledge is necessary for understanding the way in which man evolved from the ape as well as for understanding the reasons for this development. It is possible to learn from it when, where and why there were turns and deviations in the continuous line of human development, with the appearance of various "side species". "The skull is fully consistent with Darwin's prediction regarding the origin of man," emphasizes Prof. Reck.
