Google will invest at least one billion dollars in a fleet of 180 small satellites that will be used to connect to the broadband Internet in large areas of the earth that do not have cable or cellular coverage. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal.

A person close to Google's satellite program told the newspaper that the project would involve small, high-capacity satellites that would orbit the Earth in a lower orbit than typical satellites.

According to the news, the project will be headed by Greg Wheeler, the founder of the satellite company O3b Networks, that Google participated in the investment round in 2010 in the amount of 1.2 billion dollars. The meaning of the name O3b is "the other three billion people (other 3 billion people) who lack broadband access due to geographic limitations, political instability in their country or economic situation. So far, four satellites have been launched and four more are planned for launch in July.
Spice News website It was reported that L5/WorldVu company, in which Google and O3b Networks are partners, purchased frequencies in the Ku band area that were assigned back in the late nineties to the Skybridge company and which planned to launch 360 small satellites to provide a similar service but went bankrupt.

  1. Technological imperialism in the sky of Africa.
You forgot that there is no such thing as a corporation that gets up in the morning and helps humanity
    1. NSA sponsored spying
    2. Creating a monopoly on Africa's internet infrastructure

Google will not pay $3 billion just because Africans have beautiful faces

  2. Google does nothing for others. This morning I looked at GMAIL, and it said something like: a big script is running over all text. That is, a large software performs processing for all mail. I guess they also don't usually notify when they do this processing. And let's say I send commercial knowledge or a scientific article in GMAIL. Do they set the limit for themselves, and not steal the knowledge and pass it on to someone else? Suppose they left me in the room alone
To keep a lot of money, and they trust me not to take from it.
How would we feel if they told us: the NSA installed 180 satellites with cameras to lighten our faces. Another thing: how does one organization have the money to donate 180 satellites.
