1952: Professor Einstein rejects the request to serve as President of the State of Israel

A new book, produced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reveals for the first time instructive diplomatic correspondence of Abba Evan, who is still considered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as "diplomat number 1". A particularly fascinating correspondence was recorded that year between Even, then ambassador to the United Nations, and Professor Albert Einstein, the father of the atom and the genius Jewish scientist. Evan officially offered Einstein, on behalf of the Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, the position of President of the State.

Einstein, it is clear from his letter, did not go out of his way. In the reply letter he replies thanks - but no thanks: "I am deeply moved by the offer from our State of Israel, although also sad, as a result of the fact that it will be impossible for me to accept the offer. Since all my life I have been dealing with objects in the world, I have neither the natural ability nor the necessary experience to deal with people and hold official positions. For this reason I do not feel that I am able to fulfill the requirements of this great task..."
