The tsunami waves that spread in the Pacific Ocean after the strong earthquake in Chile yesterday, were weaker than expected and did not cause any damage. Alertness was declared on all coasts of the ocean - North and South America, Siberia, Japan, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. About 12 hours after the noise, the waves reached Hawaii, but in the Gulf of Hilo, on the Big Island - facing the direction from which the wave came, were not damaged since the wave was only one meter high.

Meanwhile, Chile is reporting serious damage from the noise, including about 300 deaths.

An earthquake with a very strong 8.8 on the Richter scale (that is, 300 times stronger than the noise that destroyed Haiti about a month ago) hit the center of Peru this morning.

The US Geological Service reported that the epicenter was at the boundary between the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate. The two halo plates move relative to each other by about 80 millimeters per year. The noise occurred at a fault line between the two plates when the Nazca plate falls down and stabilizes under the South American plate.

The coast of Chile has known very large earthquakes. Since 1973, there have been 13 earthquakes over 7 on the Richter scale. The noise that struck today (February 27) occurred about 230 kilometers north of the area where an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.5 on the Richter scale occurred in May 1960, and which was the strongest earthquake recorded in the last 200 years.

Even then, the noise was accompanied by a tsunami that killed about 200 people in Japan, Hawaii and the Philippines.

Today, Chile reports about 130 dead, but it is estimated that the number will rise, it is impossible to prepare for an earthquake of such magnitude, but the low number compared to the number of victims in the earthquake that struck Haiti about months ago and caused the death of about 200,000 people, is due to the fact that, after all, the construction in 'Yala is stronger.

Tsunami alert in Hawaii

A tsunami alarm was activated in the Hawaiian Islands today (2.5 p.m. Israel time), when a huge tsunami wave makes its way across the Pacific Ocean. Two hours later the wave is expected to reach New Zealand and another hour later to Australia. The fear is that the height of the wave will reach XNUMX meters, which means at least one floor.

On several islands in the Pacific, the police ordered to evacuate tens of thousands of residents from the beaches. On other islands, the authorities ordered citizens to go to high floors and lock the houses.

Unlike in other tsunami cases, the authorities in Hawaii had enough hours to prepare the evacuation. In addition, all yachts and ships in marinas in Hawaii were evacuated. Hilo International Airport near the beach is closed. In Honolulu, queues stretched near supermarkets of citizens who wanted to stock up on food, water and electric batteries.
