Earth Day - what each of us can do for the environment

Today, 22/04, the world will celebrate Earth Day.

Since there is no reason to celebrate, it is appropriate that in addition to parades, demonstrations and voluntary activities, in addition to the pressures that the public will exert on the governments, each and every one should do what can be done in his home and in his immediate surroundings.
When there are more and more extreme natural phenomena such as storms, floods, droughts, when the extinction of animals increases, when pollution in general and plastic pollution in particular grab headlines, it is appropriate to stop and ask what we can do?

When governments and conservation bodies are active and influence the environment and our lives, it is important that we choose how to behave, since individual activity affects our future, so that we produce less waste and so that our lives are more friendly to the natural environment.
Here are some simple things to do (or avoid doing)

  • eat less meat Meat production consumes more land and more water.
  • use less paper. Paper is made from trees that are cut down.
  • Print less, so you save paper.
  • Do not use plastic bags, plastic is non-biodegradable and pollutes forever.
  • Turn off lights when not needed, no need to waste electricity.
  • Reduce the time you use water in the shower, it's a shame to waste water.
  • Turn off water when brushing teeth.
  • Water a garden early in the morning.
  • fix water leaks.
  • Buy local produce, less transportation saves energy.
  • Buy recycled products, recycling prevents the exploitation of resources.
  • Not to harm wild animals, to live a right to exist that is not conditional on us.
  • Plant trees, forests absorb carbon, stabilize climate, prevent soil erosion.
  • To make compost from organic waste, less landfill and more reuse.
  • Do not use products that contain tiny balls, plastic balls that penetrate everywhere (microbeads).
  • If possible work from home, less travel, less utilization of resources,
  • To buy wisely as needed and not to throw away food, it is worth getting rid of the "culture" of offensive consumption.
  • Donate objects, clothes, etc. that are not needed, there is always someone in need.
  •  Store food in glass containers, not in polluting plastic.
  •  Do not use plastic drinking straws.
  • Don't litter, the "subculture" of littering is a sick evil.

If everyone observes simple and easy to follow rules, we will advance the chance for a world with a better future.

  1. You forgot:
    * Prefer using public transportation.

Details about the microbeads and where they can be found are also needed. I imagine that we are not talking only about pops of a certain type.
