Your TV may turn into a cell phone in a few years. This is according to a new study by the global research company Strategy Analytics, which specializes in business consulting for technology companies, which dealt in the field of "connected" household consumer products. The results of the study show that about a third of the digital television devices that will be used by the year 2010 will actually be cell phones capable of receiving television broadcasts. The survey attributes the reason for this to the ambition of the cell phone manufacturers to insert a 'television device into every pocket', through their products.

The study also states that the "traditional" televisions will not disappear, and their market will continue to be stable for many more years, as the demand for those "old" televisions will also increase - at the same time as the demand for the mobile television devices. The study estimates that the companies that will make up the majority of the transition to mobile digital televisions will be Samsung, Sony and Sony-Ericsson and LG.

"For the cellular phone industry, the implementation of digital television technology in its products will be a fairly minor event," said David Mercer, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, "but for the digital television industry, the transition to mobile cellular phones will open the door to new opportunities. The television industry itself will be the one to push the mobile devices into people's hands. However, the difficulty will be to convince the people to use those cell phones as a television."

According to the study, 71 million digital televisions will be sold this year worldwide, of which 1.9 million will actually be digital televisions based on cell phones. In 2010, digital television sales will amount to 279 million units, of which 73.5 million are based on cell phones.

Despite the estimated growth, the digital television industry on mobile phones is still expected to face several difficulties, mainly in the field of usability, changing the mental perception of the media, technical problems in the mobile networks and regulatory and legal problems.
