A new Israeli development: a motorized robot for locating suspicious objects and for tasks that can endanger human life

The main innovation in the Ram - a vehicle with a camera - is the sensing device that the students from Ariel 'implanted' in it: it includes a line laser and a camera installed on it, with the help of which it is able to detect and warn of obstacles and dangerous objects that it encounters in its wanderings.

Who doesn't know the police robot, the one remotely operated, that dismantles bombs? A new Israeli development by two students, Avraham Plotnitsky and Yonatan Abdani, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at the Ariel University Center in Samaria, is challenging the older generation of robots with a robot vehicle they developed, which serves as a motorized warning system against dangerous objects, or suspects, and also knows how to navigate itself to a destination, without need for the guidance of the operator.

The robot, affectionately nicknamed Ra'am (vehicle with a camera), moving on chains for the benefit of offenses in difficult field conditions, looks as if it came from the future. The main innovation in Raam is the sensing device that the students 'implanted' in it: it includes a line laser and a camera installed on it, with the help of which it is able to detect and warn of obstacles and dangerous objects it encounters in its wanderings. The robot is activated by its creators using the photographed information coming from the front camera and can also be activated automatically. According to the two, it is even possible to think of situations in which the mobile robot can be used as a carrying base for a variety of additional electronic sensing systems, which it can easily carry on its back, a fact that makes it ideal for spying missions in difficult or impassable field conditions, and especially, in places where there is danger for human life (for example in an area where dangerous gas is dispersed).

The project was presented as part of an exhibition presenting the final projects of the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the Ariel University Center in Samaria, and according to the students, there are already industrial parties showing commercial interest in it.

  1. What is the innovation compared to robots / UAVs that have existed for a long time in the military field? what size is it Is the robot in the picture the robot in question? If so, it does not seem particularly suitable for impassable areas.
