Report as of 21:40: We are going to land in California

Flight controllers of the shuttle Atlantis decided to land at Edwards Air Force Base in California, after the weather in Florida showed no signs of improvement.

The shuttle commander Rick Strokov and his deputy - shuttle pilot Lee Archambault are scheduled to start the engine burn-in for the landing at 14:43 EST (21:43 Israel time, i.e. a few more minutes), and the landing will take place one hour and six minutes later - 22: 49 as mentioned in Edwards.

Rain showers were the reason for canceling the first landing attempt at Kennedy. Flight controllers and weather forecasters working for NASA continued to monitor the weather at both landing sites. In the event that a postponement is decided, there are two other later landing options at Edwards.

Severe weather conditions at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida forced flight controllers to give up on the first landing opportunity

Rain and thunderstorms in Florida caused flight controllers of the space shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-117 to cancel the shuttle's first landing attempt. The crew and control center personnel are now turning their efforts to the next lap, which will have landing opportunities in both Florida and Edwards Air Force Base in California.

The Kennedy Space Center is the preferred site, and the landing there is expected at 15:55 (22:55 Israel time). If flight controllers decide to select this option, Spacecraft Commander Rick Strokov and Deputy Lee Archambault will fire the engines at 21:50 to descend toward Florida. The landing opportunities in Florida are a few minutes earlier - if it is decided to land there, the ignition will take place at 21:43 and the landing at 22:49.

The shuttle has enough fuel and supplies to stay in orbit until Sunday, but NASA estimates that they will try to land it on Saturday at the latest.
