Top-class research institutions in the UK and Israel will collaborate, thanks to an innovative initiative by the Friends of the Weizmann Institute in the UK (Weizmann UK).

The program, called "Making Connections", will encourage scientific collaborations between researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science with their colleagues from Oxford University, Cambridge University, Imperial College London and University College London. The timing chosen to launch the project - during the ongoing attempts by British organizations to impose a boycott on Israeli academic institutions - is intended to clarify that science is an activity that unites all of humanity, and that the phrase "academic boycott" contradicts itself. Indeed, University College London has just announced that it is ending its boycott of Israeli academia

The Society of Friends of the Weizmann Institute in Great Britain was established in 1950 and since then has supported many research activities, but this is the first time that it is mobilized to promote scientific collaborations between scientists from the two countries. With the launch of the program, which is funded by donations collected in the UK, 29 applications for research grants were submitted. A committee of experts from all the research institutions participating in the program selected from among these applications ten research programs that moved to the second stage, and from these five programs were selected to receive the requested funding. The members of the committee were Prof. Benjamin Chain (from University College), Prof. David Clague (from Imperial College) and the Vice President of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Prof. Haim Gerty.

The five winning research programs will deal with the study of learning and memory processes in the brain, the understanding of dark energy in the universe, physical principles of basic processes in living cells, deciphering molecular processes in living cells, and self-assembly processes of advanced materials.

Lord Parry Mitchell, Chairman of the Society of Friends of the Weizmann Institute in Great Britain: "This is a very important development in the international scientific cooperation of the Weizmann Institute and the British research organizations alike. The first five selected projects deal with some of the most challenging areas at the forefront of scientific research. We are proud to lead the joint effort of scientists from Britain and Israel, in these promising fields."

The president of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Prof. Daniel Zeifman: "Science knows no boundaries. Scientific inventions and discoveries sooner or later serve all human beings wherever they are, and therefore it is only natural that scientists of different nationalities will focus, together, on expanding the boundaries of human knowledge. Our vision is that this modest pioneering program will develop into a broad and prestigious bi-national program, such as the programs the State of Israel has with the USA and Germany. Such a program, which will be conducted on a competitive basis, and quality assessment, will serve scientists from all universities and research institutions in both countries."

The Friends of the Weizmann Institute in Great Britain were surprised by the success of the program, and already today they are rapidly preparing for its expansion.

  1. I read not long ago that the English boycotted the university connections
    With Israel, what happened?

  2. Did you notice that one of the projects is about dark energy?
I have an idea to offer them research for half the price (half a million dollars) of the idea of dark mass and energy and after a month to come back to them and tell them that I didn't find them, nada!, and to forget about them and the money.
Besides, what's up here on the site? I haven't visited in a long time, and the censorship?
And how is my dear father (really)
    And Michael?
I won't ask about Hugin because she occasionally visits "Science and Nature"
And besides, have a good Shabbos
And the main thing is that Maccabi won yesterday
    Sabdarmish Yehuda

  3. who knows? Maybe we'll get another million dollars? There will already be 3 million together with Japan and China. In the end we will get even richer.

  4. That first they deal with all the anti-Semitic and Muslim lecturers who are inciting against us in an extreme, indecent and vile way in universities in England and who tried to create an official academic boycott and until they succeed there is a de facto academic boycott.
