Cinnamon contains a substance that inhibits the development of Alzheimer's and even breaks down deposits that have already formed

Cinnamon has healing properties for Alzheimer's disease. This is according to a study conducted by researchers led by Prof. Michael Ovadia from the Department of Zoology in the Faculty of Life Sciences at Tel Aviv University. Several laboratories in the faculty participated in the research, including the laboratories of Prof. Ehud Gazit, the University's Vice President for Research and Development, Professor Danny Segal and Dr. Dan Frankel.
After Prof. Ovadia discovered in the past that an active substance found in the cinnamon plant has properties that inhibit the activity of enveloped viruses such as the influenza virus, it turned out that the same property of substances with a high absorption of ultraviolet radiation may also help inhibit the joining of amyloid molecules into one long chain as is the case In Alzheimer's disease, in which amyloid fibers are formed, causing deposits in the brain and killing nerve cells.
The study was conducted in two phases. In the first step, the researchers tried to test the substance's ability to inhibit the formation of fibers in a test tube, and it turned out to their surprise that it also breaks down the large intermediate molecules that then connect to the fibers, and moreover, it turned out that the substances extracted from the cinnamon also correct the situation retroactively, so that if and when the substance becomes a medicine, it can help Even in the correction of the situation after the fibers have already been formed.
In a second step, the researchers tested the material on experimental animal models suffering from Alzheimer's - flies that were injected with a gene that causes Alzheimer's and transgenic mice that have five mutations that cause strong symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. In both cases, Alzheimer's disease shortens the life span and reduces the animal's activity. Giving cinnamon to flies in food and mice in water, the behavior of those animals became similar to that of their healthy counterparts, both in terms of longevity and activity.

Why the cinnamon? Prof. Ovadia has a surprising answer. About fifty years ago, when he was a teenager, he was awarded the title of Deputy Groom of the National Bible for Youth. One of the questions dealt with the composition of the holy oil ointment that the priests applied before offering the sacrifices. "I had a blackout and couldn't remember, right with the gong I remembered the case of Tisha and the band. Since then I remember every time I come to this case. And one day I had an insight that maybe it made sense to provide the priests with protection against the serious infections that come from the dead animals and their blood. Since most of the ingredients of Moskva are unknown today (perfume stick for example) I focused on cinnamon. Indeed, we were able to isolate from it a substance with important medical properties."

How much cinnamon should be eaten to gain protection against Alzheimer's?
Prof. Ovadia: "There is a problem here, inside the cinnamon there are substances that are toxic to the liver, so you can absorb up to 6 grams of them per day. However, in order to enjoy the medical benefits, you need to consume tens of grams per day at least, this is starting to become dangerous. That's why we developed a method to extract the active substance from the cinnamon and eliminate, as much as possible, the toxic substances." Prof. Ovadia, who is considered an expert on snake venom, therefore decided to make a change of direction in researching the properties of cinnamon.

Tel Aviv University submitted a patent application for the material through the Ramot company. Preliminary findings from the study were recently published in the journal Plos one.

  1. I found real Celiani cinnamon in the spice shops in Levinsky. Its price is 10 times that of Chinese cinnamon, NIS 50 per 100 grams
It is better to organize and import together. Cinnamon is very easy
You need to find a reliable source

  2. How can you differentiate between the cassia and cylony - powder. I don't want to trust what the seller tells me,
    Thanks

  3. It is very difficult to consume powdered cinnamon. It is much easier to use cinnamon essential oil.
I brush my teeth every morning with two drops of cinnamon oil and two drops of juniper. It does wonders for problem gums and also keeps the mouth from smelling.

  4. Following on from the article regarding Professor Michael Ovadia's discovery and his reference to damages that may result from the long-term use of cinnamon to liver functions.
I would like to bring to your attention that according to my personal and limited examination, most of the cinnamon sold in Israel (all cinnamon, of course) is not "real" cinnamon, but the product of a tree called cassia:
    cassia
which originates from China, Indonesia and India. This tree does contain a toxic substance called coumarin:
    coumarin
which may cause cumulative liver damage. The real cinnamon whose name is indeed:
    Cinnamon zeylanicum
It originates in Sri Lanka only, it is more expensive and as far as I know it is not imported to Israel. All my attempts to locate him failed and finally I brought him to myself personally.
According to my personal and limited testing, this cinnamon does not contain the toxic substance and can be used with confidence.
In Europe this is the only type that is allowed to be used under the commercial name "Cinnamon".
These two different species can only be distinguished in the condition of cinnamon sticks, in powder of course they look the same.
You tried to attach a picture but I couldn't, so the real cinnamon is the one that looks like a cigar, the cassia looks like a hollow pipe - that's what is sold in Israel.
I suggest to anyone who intends to use cinnamon in large quantities and regularly - to check the issue thoroughly for themselves.

  5. Apparently the active ingredient is polyphenol, if this is true there are spices with a higher percentage of polyphenols that are not as expensive to produce as cinnamon.
to look for the same polyphenols in herbs like oregano for example.

  6. My grandfather would have become a happy man today. And as someone who helped a lot of people before the state and before antibiotics, here is something else he said about cinnamon: when it is baked into cakes it is not worth anything, it only gives flavor, but if you eat it with a grated apple, then it is useful for wisdom and memory, because the apple cancels the poison I don't know if this is true, but I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years the scientists will prove this too.

  7. When the active substance is identified, they will have to produce an analogue of the natural substance and market it as a medicine.
Of course, medicine will not be extracted from the bark of the cinnamon tree.
The story about priests and incense in a scientific context sounds ridiculous and anecdotal.
The statistical achievement together with the study of the mechanism sounds more modest and real.
I hope that the achievement will eventually be developed into an essential drug for the severe and excruciating Alzheimer's disease.
Many solutions to natural deficiencies are found in natural materials and await scientific exposure.

  8. Amazing, the first time I hear a story about someone who managed to get a fruitful idea from the Bible.

  9. The cinnamon Cinnamomum zeylanicum is a (rare) tree that grows in equatorial regions,
It originates from Ceylon / Srilanka,
The spice is the bark of the trunk and branches (raw or ground),
In the places where the spice is produced, the trees are peeled alternately so as not to damage the tree,
Because of the peeling, the shell takes on the typical cylindrical shape,
Every "grandma" knows that cinnamon is used as a preservative and repels mold,
Extracting the active substance and separating it from the "toxins" requires huge amounts of bark from the tree,
Which raises doubts about the viability of the production in the face of the danger to the trees.
