China is planning a new manned spacecraft

China is developing a new manned spacecraft more advanced than the current Shenzhou spacecraft. It is intended to be used in the future for manned flights to the moon and for more distant purposes. Allusion to manned flights to Mars. From the Chinese announcements, it can be understood that the two spaceships will simultaneously serve the purposes of the Chinese Space Agency, in particular what concerns the new space station that the Chinese are working on.

The spaceship has two parts, the command cabin where the astronauts sit and the bathroom cabin where the propulsion system and the life support system are located. The total length of the spacecraft is 9 meters and the total weight is 20 tons. There can be 5-4 people in the control cabin and the weight of the cargo it can carry is 500 kg. The command cabin is designed so that upon landing it can be reused and the spacecraft as a whole can be used for different purposes. No word was given on possible targets. Possible goals are connecting to the space station, connecting to other manned spacecraft in orbit around the Earth and flights to the moon. In the future even farther to Mars.

Copy from Russia and Apollo

The command cabin resembles its counterpart in the new Russian spacecraft that is supposed to enter service and is named "Federation" and the service cabin resembles its counterpart in the Apollo spacecraft. The cockpit looks large, which indicates a large internal volume that allows for a stay of 5-4 people (technonauts). It seems that the command cabin can connect a working cabin for operations when the spacecraft is launched into orbit around the Earth or a landing cabin for a flight to the moon. An unmanned test flight is planned for the first half of this year 2020, manned flights to the moon in the mid-30s.

  1. It doesn't seem to me that a 500 kg payload would be enough for 4-6 passengers on a space trip. There seems to be a mistake in the number.
Thanks to Chaim Mazar for an interesting article.
