China admitted - we hit the satellite with a missile

The US and Taiwan see this as a strategic threat from China

A missile that hit the satellite was launched from near the Zichang Space Center on January 11. About 13 days late, China admitted that it had carried out an experiment in destroying a satellite. The spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that the experiment was carried out but claimed that "China is committed to the peaceful development of space".

According to reports which were published a few days ago China hit with a medium-range ballistic missile a weather satellite of its own production that ended its active life. A senior official in Taiwan said that he sees the test as an aggressive step on China's part.

In the meantime, the American magazine Aviation Week and Space Technology publishes that the Chinese Feng Yun 1C satellite that was traveling in a polar orbit was destroyed by an anti-missile system launched from near the Xixiang Space Center on January 11. The experiment was conducted at an altitude of 865 kilometers and not 750 as initially published.

The report was confirmed by US National Security Council spokesman Gordon D'Ondro last Thursday.
