Scientists condemn President Bush's veto on stem cell research

The Senate may reverse the decision, but the majority in the House of Representatives may not be enough to overcome a veto

For the second time in less than a year, President Bush vetoed a bill in June 2007 that sought to reduce restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. The proposal, which passed the Senate and the House of Representatives by a margin not sufficient to defend the president's motto, allowed organizations that receive government funding to conduct research in the field of stem cells produced from surplus embryos from fertility treatments, intended for destruction. "I will not allow our nation to cross that moral line," Bush said.

Bush also announced that he had signed an executive order - without a budget being allocated - ordering the government to support stem cell research that was produced without creating or destroying embryos. He cited exciting examples of three such studies that reported the reprogramming of mouse skin cells into cells that look and act like embryonic stem cells. This work has only been done in mice and these cells are accompanied by problems that may make them unsafe to use for healing.

Scientists, scientific organizations and critics in Congress condemned the veto and dismissed the importance of the presidential order - calling it a red herring. The American Association for the Advancement of Science said that the order "is not a replacement for the law that Bush vetoed and commented that the new approaches supported by the order are currently eligible for federal funding anyway.

Insufficient

Catherine Plath, a biologist who works in the field of stem cells at the University of California, Los Angeles, says that Bush's instruction does not satisfy her "because we must study stem cells issued from fertilization laboratories to understand what human stem cells are at all." Plath, who was the lead researcher on one of the papers Bush referenced, commented that the results her group achieved have not been replicated in human stem cell experiments so far. "Reprogramming human cells may just not work." saying.

As you know, federal funding is currently limited to work on embryonic stem cell lines that were produced before August 2001. A recent survey published in the journal Science showed that 60% of over a thousand patients in fertility laboratories who responded to the study said that they would probably donate the embryos that would not be done on them Using stem cells for research instead of destroying them or donating them to other couples, so if the law had not been blocked, a huge source of stem cells for research would have been opened up.

The Senate is expected to vote again in the coming weeks on the decision following the President's veto and an attempt will be made to obtain the two-thirds majority necessary for this. However, the House of Representatives lacks a few dozen votes to achieve the majority that grants immunity from veto.

  1. to apostate
You really updated me!! Regarding the lines..shouldn't there be a soup of stem cells? Mila was sent to them to branch out what Bush forbids them to prepare at home!!
By the way, why can't stem cells from animals be used? After all, we are all similar at this point!
In any case, the whole business seems to me to be progressing slowly and will not be available to the public waiting for congenital organs to be transplanted or, better yet, to be created inside the body in the next 30 years...if they are telling the truth!
Personally, the first publication on stem cells was a surprise (1998) because there was no sign of it in the books of the broadcast university which was taught by the best experts from the XNUMXs (I checked again to see if I missed it and I didn't find any trace of them). At that time I had an idea for creating body parts or preferably a body Complete by converting energy into matter ..sounds like science fiction but it was the only plausible direction and to be honest because I got angry at a TV show hosted by Prof. Mitsuyo Kaku and then I read his book (excellent) ..in which he explained about a world with infinite dimensions (improbable) And about the transition between dimensions, as well as sending a "person in a time machine" (unlikely) like sending a fax with a copy on the other side!! I was caught up in the fax model, except that in the fax the paper sent remains with us and in fact a complete copy is made... then a machine is needed that creates the person on the other side by coding ..hence, to begin with, a machine must be created to produce a human body! And such a machine necessarily needs to convert energy into matter according to coding and virtual patterns, etc. And first of all, it needs to create the simplest thing, which is a drop of water!! And all kinds of other ideas about forms of energy, their direction, strength, content, as well Virtual models of cells, etc.. In this situation I learned about the stem cells from which, as it were, organs and the same body can be created in a more conventional way!!
To be honest, I spent a few days on it (you need to look up what I wrote on the matter) and moved on (as usual)..I don't like grinding water and although I treat it here as fun, that's not how I treated it, so I saw it as a way to extend life to at least a thousand years..just passing the The soul from a body (existing and old) to a body (new, every ten years or so) and for this you have to make sure that there is indeed a soul and find it.. because without proving the existence of the soul and the possibility of its transfer there is no point in creating a body but only in creating organs as spare parts!!
I got off of it for about 5 years .. two months ago I read a book by Dr. Leon Liebrecht (psychologist) "The Weave" and from his point of view the souls wandering in our world are a completely certain matter !!
But there is still a problem to hear them .. it requires many hours of listening and filtering (as described in the book) but if various physicists and academics have done and are doing all kinds of experiments in this direction, then I believe that these souls do exist and communication to and from them must be improved .. it would be interesting to ask They think about returning to this world in a machine-made body!! (By the way, souls were consulted on a regular basis regarding the production of a communication device for the world called Spiricum!)!
Yesterday, by the way, after many recording attempts in all kinds of places, I recorded in the Trumpeldor cemetery in Tel Aviv and I still don't have any voices from that world with me...only different noises!!

  2. Led. breach,
Some facts about stem cell research in Israel - Israel is the world leader in publications per capita in the field of stem cell research. Prof. Iskovic from the Technion and Prof. Rubinoff from the Hebrew University were the first to develop human embryonic stem cell lines. Cells that are exported all over the world and partly to the USA because they are not authorized to produce their own stem cells. A new Israeli-French center for embryonic stem cell research will soon be opened in Haifa. The embargo imposed in the USA, with all the sadness in it, also brings a blessing and promotes research in embryonic stem cells elsewhere. Many Christian countries restrict research in embryonic stem cells and this only does Israel good.

  3. To Blizovsky.. what is wrong with Europe? Or Japan or China? I was referring to them, of course if stem cell research is important to them... billions? Let them start with millions and it's not all a matter of money but also of desire and willingness, and in my opinion the rest of the world is also working on stem cells so it's not that bad if the US stops or stops for a few years... not everything will be determined by the US!!
Besides, today's scientists can work from their seat without traveling to other countries... and by the way, there are many crazy millionaires who have high hopes for stem cells to extend their lives from which they can attract investments... and what about commercial companies that will generate huge profits from finding a way to produce stem cells? Why do you even need government assistance? By the way, I understood that there is a problem of legitimacy and not of money!!
In any case, Israel is too small to work alone and just as Israeli researchers cooperate with the US, so it is possible to share research in Europe or other countries with developed science..but who knows, maybe it is a researcher with a low budget who will crack the secret if he comes up with an idea that was not thought of!!

  4. Please, propose to increase the budget for stem cell research in Israel by several billions, and let American researchers come and work here.

  5. So what?!! There are hundreds of other places in the world where you can conduct research!!
I don't understand the crucial importance that is attributed to research in the US.. as if this is a stop to all stem cell research! America is only one place in the world no more and everyone has stem cells, it is not a natural resource found in America alone.. So let them stop talking and start getting results and then America will start running after the world to move forward!!
