Tonight the maiden flight of the Boeing 787 took place

Tonight (Tuesday) at eight o'clock Israel time, a Boeing 787 (Dreamliner) plane took off for its maiden flight. This is a plane built with modern technologies and lightweight composite materials, designed to save up to 20% in fuel consumption and allow direct flights to more destinations compared to previous generation planes. The Boeing company announced that so far about 840 units of the plane have been ordered and that the plane's popularity among airlines stems from Boeing's promise of low fuel consumption.

After the successful completion of tests designed to confirm the changes to the body of the plane, the last test before the maiden flight - the cruise test on the runway - during which the plane reached a speed of about 130 knots (240 km/h) was successfully carried out yesterday.

This celebration is actually taking place two years late, due to a series of development problems. Among other things, design problems were discovered and corrected. The project also experienced strikes and even a shortage of screws.

Major General (res.) David Evari, president of Boeing Israel: "This event is an important milestone in the future of civil aviation. The 787 Dreamliner will allow Boeing to continue to meet the future needs of both passengers and airlines in Israel and around the world. One Israeli company, Arkia, has already ordered the new plane, and I am confident that other companies will join it."

The 787, the "dream plane", will give passengers an improved flight experience, with innovative interior design and good air quality, extra large windows, larger storage space and special lighting. The technologically advanced plane will allow airlines to offer direct flights more frequently and efficiently, and it consumes 20% less fuel than any other passenger plane of a similar size.

The European competitor Airbus, which until now preferred to invest in a plane containing a larger number of passengers and not necessarily in lower fuel consumption, announced the construction of its new plane, the A350, which will be ready in mid-2013.

  1. Host of the universe, you should have mentioned that the flight experience itself is a nightmare. There is no place to move, the legs hurt and the air stinks. And the passengers feel that they are in a structure designed so that it can squeeze the most money out of the pockets of all passengers in the most optimal and calculated way possible.

  2. Inaccurate data.
    After takeoff from Everett, the airplane followed a route over the east end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Capts. Carriker and Neville took the airplane to an altitude of 13,200 feet (4,023 meters) and an air speed of 180 knots, or about 207 miles (333 kilometers) per hour, customary on a first flight.

  3. What bothers me all the time is the thought that in the last forty or fifty years there hasn't actually been a significant difference, or a leap forward, in my ability as a traveler to get from point to point across the globe.
    In practice, aircraft speeds do not increase.
    If the Concorde was an attempt to change this situation, then after it there were no further attempts. True, today is quieter, more comfortable, more luggage - but you still have to lose a whole day to get to New York.
    Think about leaps and bounds made by other technologies during this time and you will understand how stuck civil aviation is.

    Isn't it easier to write in Hebrew, "So far 840 planes have been ordered" or "So far 840 planes of this model have been ordered" ??
