Mosquitoes and birds versus sprays

A study conducted by avian ecologist Brigitte Poulin from the Barrel Research Center in France and published in the Journal of Applied Ecology shows that "mosquito control affected the food chain in the environmental system".

The tiger mosquito = Asian tiger = Aedes albopictus
The tiger mosquito = Asian tiger = Aedes albopictus
Summer is here and so is the nuisance of mosquitoes, but mosquitoes are not just a nuisance. The mosquitoes transmit types of fever, the Anopheles that transmits malaria is continuously exterminated, but concentrations of larvae can still be found in various places. The "tiger" mosquito lays and breeds in puddles and the risk of fever that it transmits exists and increases. It must be assumed that among the thousands of African refugees there are quite a few infected with malaria, therefore the danger of the disease "revealing" in our districts exists... and is increasing.

The national/regional treatment is by destroying the larvae in puddles. In the residents' homes, the presence of mosquitoes is prevented mainly by different sprays. The household sprays contain aromatic oils and various poisons, so it is clear that their harm is not only to mosquitoes. Until the XNUMXs, D.D.T. was used for field control. And even though it was decommissioned, its impact on the environment and nature is felt to this day. the D.D.T. They replaced sprays that were mainly based on organic phosphors, acute poisons that were also taken out of use. Today, water bodies are sprayed mainly with a substance based on a "bacterial poison" (microbicide), which means that the spray contains bacteria whose oil suggests the source and place of development Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) (hereinafter: BTI),

The bacteria injected into the water are eaten by the mosquito larvae when they reach the digestive system, the BTI causes holes in the larva's intestine. The larva's digestive system is destroyed and the larva dies. The use of BTI to exterminate (larvae) mosquitoes is common throughout the world and is considered the least toxic and more environmentally friendly alternative to chemical insecticides.

In various tests conducted to check the level of toxicity of BTI on vertebrates, no negative reactions were found, and BTI was considered safe, at least until a study was published that shows that: "BTI affects negatively on the reproduction of birds".

The study conducted by avian ecologist Brigitte Poulin from the Barrel Research Center in France and published in the Journal of Applied Ecology shows that "mosquito control affected the food chain in the environmental system."

The study showed that the success of reproduction (nesting, laying, rearing chicks) in swallows Delichon urbicum in the Camargue reserve (the mouth of the Rhône River to the Mediterranean Sea - an important and beautiful reserve) was consistent between treated (or untreated) areas. T.Y. Wherever there was pesticide in BTI, nesting success and chick rearing decreased dramatically, compared to untreated areas. The researcher says: "We demonstrated that BTI damages platelets."

A comparison was also made between periods before the BTI treatment in which no differences were found between the regions, it turns out that the problem is in the availability of food. One of the important food components for platelets are... mosquitoes, in a three-year test, the food components of platelets in treated areas were examined compared to platelets in untreated areas (in BTI), platelets in untreated areas mainly hunted mosquitoes and flies, while platelets in treated areas mainly hunted Ants (flying).

That is: in areas treated with BTI there were not enough mosquitoes for the platelets, there was not enough food available and therefore there was a low level of reproduction - two chicks per nest, compared to three chicks in "clean" areas. The researcher hopes that her findings will stop the use of BTI in the Camargue reserve.

North American ecologists who have read the study say that a (partial) explanation may be found for the dramatic decline in the numbers of birds that eat insects. In America as well as in other places where B.T.I. is used. At the same time, there is a need for a wide and comprehensive examination of the impact of the BTI on the environmental complex.

Pauline (the researcher) is now turning to test the effect of BTI on the invertebrates that live in the reed beds in the reserve (Kamarg). It is clear that the negative effect that was discovered is not a reason (or an excuse) to return to the use of chemical insecticides, but it is definitely a reason to consider the necessity of spraying in any case and everywhere.

  1. I have a mosquito plague in my house only on the balcony, I found out that the mosquitoes come out of the drain of the washing machine waste
With what substance can I kill the larvae, a strong substance that stores can sell me, many thanks to Lior

  2. I heard about a "means" to treat the Asinian tiger and I would like to know if anyone knows anything about it:
A piece of copper (for example, a bent pipe), weighing several hundred grams, should be placed in a bucket of water. The claim is that from the eggs that the mosquitoes will lay, sterile mosquitoes/mosquitoes will hatch and in a chain process the mosquito population will eliminate itself.
    what do you think ?

  3. (anonymous promoted)
Since I was Prof. Margalit's research assistant, you don't need to explain to me about mosquitoes (-8.
Regarding West Nile fever: In the United States, West Nile virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, primarily members of the Culex species
    From: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/insects.htm
Aads is also on the list: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/mosquitoSpecies.htm

Another correction: the BTI was not developed in Israel but was discovered, by chance, in a puddle in the Negev.

  4. I have a client who installs nets and I have a friend who ordered these nets from my client.
    My friend's response.
For two years I barely slept and only after I paid 1500 NIS and bought nets did I sleep soundly.
    It was worth every penny

  5. age,

Don't worry, there is a new invention in the final stages of development, which allows you to leave the windows open and prevents the mosquitoes from entering. It's called "networks". I have a prototype installed at home and it just works amazing!!!

  6. to R.H.
A little humility, swallows at the expense of humans or vice versa?
Seven billion copies are not enough, do you want more?

  7. Mosquitoes are the #1 energy consumers
They make the residents of the house close the windows and turn on the air conditioners.

  8. Assaf, why exactly is my response wrong? It's not me who wrote that Colax transfers the fever. The truth is that I agree with everything you wrote in your response 5.
What I don't like is the slogan in the last sentence, which represents exactly what I resented in response 1. There is a danger that the extreme greens turn from crowd pleasers who drag the rule after them into tyrants and snoozers who provoke opposition and only harm an issue that is as important to me as it is to you. Human population control?

  9. Corrections
    - In the editing, the - and - fell out in the first paragraph, it should be fevers (plural),
(Perhaps this causes R.H.'s mistaken reaction?)
The one who transmits the fever (malaria) is the Anopheles,
To Anonymous - most mosquito species are active / bite even during the day,
West Nile fever is one of a number of diseases transmitted by the "tiger" (not Colax),
the d.d. T. It was allowed to be used only inside buildings in areas plagued by malaria (Uganda and the like).
The damages he caused can be measured even today.
There is no doubt that the BTI is the least harmful (environmentally) measure and despite this as the research shows
    The new one... has damage.
The last sentence says it all... any intervention in the environment must be done while understanding all the consequences
And if possible... do not interfere, for example: there is no need to spray in places where there is no danger of an outbreak
Malaria... the sprays in the Camargue are mainly intended to prevent mitrades (not fever),
A nuisance that can be prevented with less lethal methods - for example nets or the use of repellents
    mosquitoes in residents' homes,
I invite the readers to write -malaria- in the search and be impressed by the dozens of articles in "Hidan" on the thorny subject, (including my articles).
    And again to R.H.
    It's time to:
Instead of controlling the environment for the sake of the human population,
There will be control over the human population for the sake of the environment!

  10. And sorry, but West Nile fever is transmitted by Culex, which is precisely the more familiar variety (these are the mosquitoes that bite at night)

  11. correction:
One of the food sources of the platelets are the mosquitoes' predators: dragonflies and spiders. Because there is a decrease in mosquitoes, there is a decrease in predators in the area.
Reference to the abstract of the article: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/123497839/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0
I recommend reading articles whose title is expressing an opinion with suspicion. The source of the article is a nature conservation organization that has a certain interest (even in the summary itself, pay attention to points 5 and 6. Point 5 is not so factually correct (during the 30 years since BTI was discovered, many studies have been done on its environmental impact, including in Israel - to whom who does not know, the BTI was discovered by Prof. Yoel Margalit of Ben Gurion)
Point 6 concludes with conclusions regarding nature conservation, which is a question that concerns politics more than science (see, for example, the decisions regarding whaling that were made this week...)

  12. With all the sympathy and sympathy that most of us have for green issues, I think that today there is exaggeration and extremism to which opinions and articles such as this lead.
What do you say? For years they called for a green pesticide without chemical substances, DDT was considered the progenitor of all evil. And it turns out that the breast is not so terrible that the World Health Organization (WHO) has allowed it to be used in closed places in areas plagued by malaria.
    http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2006/pr50/en/
So now there is finally a green pest control with the BTI bacteria and again the greens come and protest that it kills the city swallows. Hello? Every year over two million (!) people die from malaria and you worry about swallows?

Note that humanity has already given up here by choosing to use the less effective spray and who knows how many die every year because of not using DDT. So relax a bit and let's think about people too.

By the way, the Asian tiger does not transmit the malaria parasite as can be understood from the article, but viral diseases such as West Nile fever and yellow fever.
