Bird flu - what is it?

Bird flu has been known as a virus of birds since 1901. In 1955, a specific strain of the influenza virus was identified as the cause of what was then called bird flu. Since then, it has been found that avian influenza viruses can cause a wide spectrum of clinical signs and cause the disease at different levels in poultry.

There are viruses with a low, moderate level of violence that leads to taking governmental measures (LPAI). and high (HPAI). The range of clinical signs is extremely wide and most of them do not unequivocally indicate the presence of bird flu. The flu can appear as a respiratory disease, as a disease in the digestive system, the reproductive system or the nervous system. The first signs of the disease are usually a decrease in food consumption and shedding. Other signs can be coughing, sneezing, swollen head and more. At the same time, sudden death of birds without any clinical signs is also possible.

As part of the Ministry of Agriculture's assessments to deal with the suspicion of avian influenza in Binyamin, the cracking unit (plant and living inspection) of the Ministry of Agriculture is in contact and cooperation with the Israel Police for the purpose of enforcing the quarantine on the movement of animals.

The cracking unit inspectors are deployed on the roads in the area of ​​the focus, to carry out the quarantine in a radius of three kilometers around it, to prevent the removal of winged animals from the quarantine area. Also, later in the day, the cracking unit inspectors handed out closure orders to poultry farms in the area.
