Prof. Ariel Porat was elected president of Tel Aviv University

Replaces Prof. Yosef Klefter, who completed two terms as president of the university

The Board of Trustees of Tel Aviv University 20 today (19.5) confirmed the appointment of Prof. Ariel Porat as the president of the university. The decision of the board of trustees was made after the executive committee accepted the search committee's recommendation and approved the appointment unanimously, and after the university senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of Prof. Porat's election.

The incoming president replaces Prof. Yossi Klifter, who completed two terms as president of Tel Aviv University.

Prof. Ariel Porat graduated with a bachelor's degree in law at Tel Aviv University and then completed the third degree in the direct path to a doctorate. He did his post doctorate at Yale University. His research topics are: contract law, tort law and economic analysis of the law.

Prof. Porat holds a chair at Tel Aviv University and holds a visiting professor's chair at the University of Chicago. He also served as a visiting professor at many prestigious universities in the world, such as: Stanford, NYU, Columbia, Berkeley, Virginia and Toronto. For his research excellence, he won many awards, including the AMT Award, as well as the Cheshin Award, the Zeltner Award, and the Sussman Award. Prof. Porat is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

In the years 2002-1998, Prof. Porat served as the head of the Tsegala Super-Center for multidisciplinary legal research. In this framework, he founded the journal Theoretical Inquiries in Law, which is ranked as the first legal journal in the world outside the USA.

In the years 2006-2002 he served as the dean of the Faculty of Law at Tel Aviv University, which became an international and multidisciplinary faculty during these years. Among other things, Prof. Porat founded two international master's degree programs, one joint with Berkeley University and the other with Northwestern University. He also established many student exchange programs with the best law schools in the USA.

As dean, Prof. Porat founded and led the admissions program for outstanding students from the periphery, which was later implemented in the entire university, and was even a partner in other social programs that operated on campus such as 'University in the People'.

Prof. Ariel Porat: "It has been a great privilege for me to be the head of such a magnificent institution as Tel Aviv University. However, along with this right I also have a heavy responsibility - towards the university's faculty and students and towards society in Israel. I am proud to take on this responsibility. I will do everything to lead the university to new heights."
