The Abbott Company and Yade Research and Development Ltd., the commercial arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science, have signed an agreement for a period of three years according to which the Abbott Company will finance research programs at the Weizmann Institute of Science in selected fields of medicine.

The collaboration will examine scientific opportunities for drug discovery, to identify biological markers for targeted drug treatments and to develop diagnostic technologies.

"The Weizmann Institute of Science and Abbott have collectively devoted nearly 200 years to improving people's lives through scientific and technological innovations, and this collaboration is designed to further advance our shared goal," said Edward L. Michael, Senior Vice President, Diagnostic Products Division at Abbott.

Yeda Company is locating commercial partners in order to introduce Weizmann Institute of Science technologies to the market, according to Dr. Ruth Ben Yakar, director of the business development department at Yeda Company. Similar partnerships in the past gave birth to dozens of products that are sold today.

"Recognizing the importance of the synergy that can grow from strategic collaborations between the scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science and global companies based on science such as Abbott, we invite Abbott to join forces and promote the development of new drugs and advanced diagnostic tools," said Dr. Ben Expensive.
