The guide to the solar eclipse of August 21 in the USA

The total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 is one that has been waiting for years. It is already difficult to find rooms along the path over which the eclipse will pass that will cross the USA from Oregon to South Carolina.

The partial solar eclipse phase will begin at 15:47 Universal Time (or Greenwich Mean Time) and will last five hours and 18 minutes until 21:04. The partial eclipse will be seen by viewers in large parts of all continents except Australia and Antarctica. The moon's 115-kilometer-wide shadow (known as the umbra) will first cover the Oregon coast at 17:16 PM GMT (10:16 AM local time) and will move east at 3,900 kilometers per hour. The shadow will cover 14 countries during its passage over the earth. The two minute and forty second maximum full section will take place near Carbondale, Illinois.

It will start to get interesting just a few minutes before the total eclipse reaches your location. Try to locate the moment when the shadow reaches the ground near you, an event that is difficult to photograph. It is allowed to take off the protective glasses a second or two before the total eclipse, when you can see the last rays of the sun crossing the valleys on the edge of the visible part of the moon, creating what is known as the "diamond ring effect". Now we are in the most important time - the total eclipse, but you must not blink. It is permissible to look at the sun in this state and see the corona which provides during the passage a halo whose light is similar in intensity to that of the full moon.

Think about it - you understand what it is about and have been preparing for it for years, what would our ancestors have thought thousands of years ago and maybe even millions of years ago if they had suddenly encountered a strange sky?

And then very quickly - it was all over.

Be sure to keep an eye on the planets and bright stars during the eclipse. The total eclipse occurs in the late morning in the west and after the early afternoon on the east coast of the USA. All the planets visible to the unaided eye except Saturn will be above the horizon during the total eclipse, being spread within 80 degrees from Jupiter to Venus. One degree from the eclipsed sun it will be possible to see the star Regulus swallowed by the moon immediately after the eclipse.

The Eclipse MegaMovie project plans to collect as much footage as possible during the eclipse to combine them into a high-definition movie. As we have already published, NASA will fly two VB-57F aircraft that will photograph the eclipse in high definition - in visible infrared light.

You will be required to take precautions for observing the phases of the partial eclipse, as with any solar observation. Only use a telescope with a special filter designed to look at the Sun, or eclipse glasses with the ISO 12312 standard. Also be careful when projecting the sun through a telescope onto a piece of paper, as it may burn.

  1. We will not see anything from this eclipse because we are on the other side of the Earth.
Don't hold your breath for an eclipse here in Israel. The closest eclipse to our area will be in 2027, and the point of total eclipse will pass through Egypt. Another eclipse in 2049 will pass through Egypt, in 2060 there will be an eclipse that will pass through Turkey and in 2034 there will be an eclipse that will pass through Saudi Arabia

  2. I understand that we cannot see Israel either partially or fully.
According to the simulation, the shadow of the moon passes here a little after sunset.
