Despite Herzl's express request in his will, the bones of his children have not yet been brought to Israel, partly due to pressure from religious public figures. Today, 76 years after his death, the journey to bring the coffins for burial in Jerusalem began

The coffins of the two children of the state's president, Benjamin Zeev Herzl, were taken out today (Tuesday) from the ancient Jewish cemetery in the city of Bordeaux in France, on their way to Israel, where they will be buried next to their father.

The two passed away in September 1930. The daughter, Paulina (40) died of an overdose of sedatives, while her brother, Hans (39), took his own life the day after he learned of her death. Despite Herzl's express request in his will, the bones of his children have not yet been brought to Israel, partly due to pressure from religious public figures. Herzl's third daughter, Truda, was murdered in the Holocaust and her burial place is unknown.

The coffins were placed on the grave plot in Bordeaux, where a funeral prayer was held and eulogy was said. The ceremony was attended by the chairman of the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency, Ze'ev Bielski, Israel's ambassador to UNESCO, Rabbi Lod Meman, as well as personalities from the local community.

Bielski said at the ceremony: "We came here today to do historical and Zionist justice, we are closing a circle here. Herzl not only spent all his time, but also devoted all his money to the State of Israel and therefore could not take care of his children. Today we are fulfilling his will, albeit a little late, but we will bring the coffins of his children home, to be buried next to their father."

At the end of the ceremony, the coffins were taken to the airport and tonight they will arrive in Israel. Tomorrow, 76 after they passed away, they will be laid to rest next to their father's grave on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
