7 days for antibiotics. indeed?

Dutch researchers claim that some cases of pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics for three days, instead of the usual 7-10 days. The team members, led by Dr. Jan Prins from the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, published on June 10 a study conducted among 186 adults who were hospitalized after contracting pneumonia. All received amoxicillin (a synthetic penicillin-like drug) for three days. 119 of the subjects, whose condition had improved, were arbitrarily divided into two groups - one continued to receive the drug for five days, and the other received a placebo.

The patients and doctors did not know who received real treatment and who received sham treatment. At the end of the treatment, it became clear that about 89% of the patients in each group were cured of the pneumonia without further treatment. In the comments to the study, Dr. John Paul, a British microbiologist, wrote that due to the study "the current guidelines recommending a treatment of 10-7 days should be considered."
