Hundreds of clerics from Arab countries came on Thursday to the initiation ceremony of La Mesquita Mosque in Granada, Spain, which was renovated and opened to the public for the first time since the expulsion of the Muslims from Spain about 500 years ago. It is the largest house of prayer in Europe. The renovation of the mosque, which is located in front of the Alhambra Palace, lasted almost six years and the cost is estimated at 4 million euros. Funds from the United Principalities, Libya, Morocco and Malaysia participated in financing the renovation.

The mosque is controversial among the residents of Granada. The mayor of Granada participated in the dedication ceremony of the mosque, but King Juan Carlos declined the invitation due to "previous occupations". Renovation of the mosque was delayed because the Granada authorities repeatedly refused offers to renovate it for worship purposes. In the end, it was agreed that the mosque would also be an Islamic study center and offer courses in education, law, medicine and classes for learning the Arabic language. The mosque management also wants to give independent degrees in science to Muslims living in Europe.

According to the chairman of the Muslim community in Granada, the mosque does not represent a particular current in Islam. "We are interested in showing that Islam is a religion of peace and its purpose is not to provoke resentment and conflicts, as many believe," said the chairman.

Until the 13th century, the city was ruled by the dynasty founded by Nasr al-Din. In the 13th century, the city became an independent Islamic kingdom, and remained so for 250 years. Then the Alhambra palaces were also built next to the mosque. Granada was the last kingdom conquered by the Christian kings of Spain, Isabella and Ferdinand, in January 1492. Two months later, all the Jews were expelled from Spain. The Muslims also fled after them, who refused to convert to Christianity.
