On the campus of the Israeli Center for Excellence in Education in Jerusalem, the final event of the national space quiz run by the center was held last week. The event was held under the auspices of the Israel Space Agency in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the supervision of science and technology teaching in the Science Division of the Pedagogical Secretariat and with the assistance of the State Commemoration Fund in memory of the first Israeli astronaut, the late Col. Ilan Ramon.

About 3,600 students from middle schools all over the country took part in the program that started at the beginning of the year. This is a unique national competition, designed to bring together and expose students to space exploration and astronomy. Among other things, the students engaged in learning about the solar system, the movement of satellites, the force of gravity, and electromagnetic radiation.

Out of nearly 200 schools that registered for the competition, about 10 schools qualified for the final held last week at the Israel Center for Excellence in Education campus in Jerusalem. During the final event, the students were asked to answer questions on topics they had studied throughout the year, to perform a scientific experiment while analyzing satellite images and to present models they had built in advance dealing with a satellite mission on Earth. During the event, the students heard a lecture by Dov Ulis, a volunteer from the SpaceIL association, who talked about her plan to land the first Israeli spacecraft on the moon.

The judging team for the quiz, made up of experts in the field of content and education, announced at the end of the day the winners of the entire competition, based on the cumulative achievements of the teams throughout all stages of the competition. The first place was won by the students of the "Yordan" school from Givat from Ma'ale Ephraim, followed by students from two schools, the "Ort Aviation" high school from Ma'ale Adumim and the "Yad Yad" high school for bilingual education from Jerusalem. The three schools won a cash prize to be redeemed for an experiential enrichment activity.

Itai Benovich, director of the Israeli Center for Excellence in Education: "We are happy to see that registration and interest in the competition are increasing year by year. There is no doubt that nurturing young students and exposing them to astronomy in all its angles is the key to Israel becoming a powerhouse in the field."
