A Soyuz capsule containing the first Brazilian astronaut, as well as a Russian and American astronaut, landed safely in the steppes of Kazakhstan. This is after it detached from the International Space Station and completed a three and a half hour journey back to Earth. The Brazilian astronaut spent a week in space, while the American and Russian spent more than six months in the space station.
The spacecraft landed last night, 23:47 GMT (Sunday 02:47). The mission of Brazilian Air Force pilot Marcos Pontes cost the Brazilian government $10 million. Less than three years after the Brazilian space program was stopped due to the explosion of a rocket on the launch pad.
Pontes had been training for such a mission since 1998, and was originally supposed to fly on a US space shuttle.
