Russia successfully launched the Soyuz spacecraft

From Kazakhstan, the "Soyuz" spacecraft was launched towards the International Space Station with American and Russian crew members on board. For the first time in 30 years, there is no veteran astronaut on the team.
The spacecraft is expected to navigate in space and dock using an automatic system, but the crew is skilled in manually operating the systems if necessary.
For the Russians Lizan Sharipov (center) and Yuri Shergin (above), and the American Leroy Chiao, this is the first mission in a Soyuz spacecraft, thus breaking a thirty-year tradition in which at least one of the crew had experience flying a Soyuz spacecraft. Chiao and Sharipov have flown on American space shuttles while Argin is a space rookie.
The Soyuz TMA-5 took off from the plains of Kazakhstan at 07:06 Moscow time (06:05 Israel time - the difference of two hours is due to Israel switching to winter time too early). The spacecraft is scheduled to dock at the space station two days later.
