A British doctor has used cutting-edge ultrasound technology to show pictures of fetuses that appear to be smiling. According to the doctor, although the popular opinion is that babies learn to smile only at the age of six weeks, the photos prove that in a calm and stress-free environment like the womb, fetuses smile.
The technology used by Prof. Stuart Campbell from Health Center Create in the UK is called 4D Ulatrasound. Using the device, you can get a 2,000D image that moves in parallel with the movements of the fetus. In interviews given by Campbell to the British media, he claimed that using the new technology it is possible to detect movements of organs in the eighth week of pregnancy, "jumps and turns" in weeks 12-11, yawns in the 18th week and smiles in the 26th week. Campbell rejected the claim that these are accidental twitches of the facial muscles and stated that there is a connection between their conditions in the fetus and the smiles. "It is unlikely that the fetus will smile so clearly, if it is uncomfortable or if it lacks oxygen," he said in an interview with the British "Mirror" newspaper.
The anti-abortion organizations in Britain were quick to adopt Campbell's positions. "It is hard for us to believe that someone would continue to support abortion after seeing the pictures," the organization told the BBC.
