For the second time in medical history, doctors succeeded in a complicated operation to separate the legs of a baby girl suffering from the syndrome called 'sirenomelia', or in popular language the mermaid syndrome.
Doctors from the capital city of Lima in Peru managed to separate the two legs of a 13-month-old baby girl. The baby, Milagros Saron, was born with legs joined from the hips to the ankles, and therefore earned the nickname: "Mermaid". A team of 12 doctors performed the operation for four and a half hours.
The doctors initially thought to surgically correct only the birth defect up to the knees, but to their joy, the surgery was more successful than expected.
Dr. Luis Rubio, who is in charge of the operation, said while holding Malagros with his legs apart: "This is the final result of an unusual operation. This surgery proved a real success."
Milagros, whose name means "miracle", was born with a rare birth defect, which occurs once in 70,000 births.
