Cocaine and ecstasy trigger genetic mutations, according to the study of Italian researchers. "Cocaine and ecstasy have proven to be more dangerous than we imagined so far," explained Giorgio Bronzetti, head of the Department of Biotechnological Research at the National Research Center in Italy. "These drugs, apart from their toxicological effect, attack the DNA and change the hereditary materials. It is very worrying about the results of this among future generations," Bronzetti said.

In a study conducted over three years, it was stated that experiments done on animals proved a direct link between the consumption of ecstasy and cocaine and the effects on DNA. "In other words, the longer the drug consumption continues, the greater the damage to DNA," explained Bronzetti.

Data published by the UN in September shows that the use of ecstasy increased by 70% between 1995-2000. It was also announced that ecstasy and amphetamines have replaced cocaine and heroin as the greatest global narcotic danger.
