The Jacqueline Serousi Foundation for Cancer Research will award $900.000 in research awards at Tel Aviv University to six scientists engaged in lung cancer research

The Foundation for the Advancement of Cancer Research in memory of Mrs. Jacqueline Serousi, will award for the third year, at Tel Aviv University, research grants for 2004, in the amount of $900,000, to 2 Israeli scientists, 2 scientists from the USA, one from Switzerland, and one from Canada - Six scientists dealing with different aspects of respiratory cancer research.

In a festive ceremony that will be held at Tel Aviv University, on Wednesday December 1, the chairman of the foundation Mr. Ezer Weizman, the vice chairman of the foundation, the president of the university Prof. Itamar Rabinowitz, as well as the members of the board of trustees of the foundation, Prof. Marvin Korman, Mr. Brian Frith will participate , Director of WJB Chiltern Trust Co. Ltd. Trustee of the Ajax Foundation, Prof. Aaron Goldhirsch, Prof. Walter Vedder as well as Mr. Edward Serosi, scientists and doctors from Israel and the world with an international reputation.

Professor Mia Horowitz (Telof University) focuses on identifying peptides (short proteins) that inhibit the development of lung cancer and Professor Gideon Ravavi (Telof University and the Sheba Medical Center) investigates, using innovative technologies, the relationship between gene expression certain to the development of lung cancer.

The scientific work of Professor Adi F. Gazdar (University of Texas, USA) deals with the effect of genetic changes (mutations) in the receptors of a certain growth factor on the response of lung cancer patients to drug treatment. Professor Waun Kee Hong from the M.D. Center Anderson Cancer Research in Boston, Texas is investigating the possibility of preventing the development of lung cancer in smokers.

Professor Frances Shepherd Frances A. Shepherd (University of Toronto, Canada) focuses on the biological responses of lung cancer patients to drug therapy with the goal of identifying patients who are most likely to benefit from this therapy. The sixth winner of the Serosi grant is Professor von Schultz from the University of Zurich, Switzerland.
Professor Gustav Von Schulthess Gustav Von Schulthess developed advanced methods for mapping, imaging and revealing lung cancer.

At the grant distribution ceremony, Professor Shults will deliver the main lecture that will deal with the topic of his research.

The fund was established as a permanent endowment by the Ajax Foundation, according to the recommendation of Mr. Serousi, in memory of his late wife Jacqueline, who passed away as a result of a brain tumor and who during her lifetime was committed to supporting and helping others, and in particular to raising research resources in the field of cancer and alleviating the suffering of patients.
