Soot - the biggest polluter

The soot, which originates mainly from diesel engines, is the cause of global warming - and as a result of all the extreme, powerful weather events that have occurred in recent times. This is what the scientists of the US space agency claim.
About a quarter of the air pollution that causes global warming and weather changes, comes from soot. The result: a decrease in the ability of snow and ice in the world to reflect sunlight. The soot contributes to the worldwide process of snowmelt, said a special report prepared by James Hansen and Risa Nazarenko for the US National Academy of Sciences. "The soot is the bad actor in the global warming process and it is everywhere", they noted.

Soot, it turns out from the research, has twice the capacity and impact of carbon dioxide. It is the one that causes changes in the surface temperatures of the air layer in the Arctic region, that is, the polar regions in the Northern Hemisphere. The biggest source of soot is the developed countries that often use diesel engines.

High levels of soot were discovered in the air currents at the heights of the Alps that had never been there before - approximately in a ratio of 100 to 1 billion air particles. The result: the absorption capacity of the snow cover for sunlight dropped from 98 percent to 80 percent due to the soot. In the spring and summer the snow melts and at the same time there is an increase in the levels of soot that covers the surface. So the snow looks more black. The researchers warn that this trend will also be revealed in the Himalayas - then India, for example, is surrounded by currents of very hot and humid air, the steam, brown in color.

All of these only increase the greenhouse effect - the most threatening factor to the quality of the environment and to life on Earth, the scientists warn. As the concentration of carbon dioxide and soot in the atmosphere increases, it will trap more heat from the sun - and the earth will get warmer.

The researchers also claim that the soot particles adsorb toxic organic substances to them - and this is already a danger to human health. Soot and similar substances penetrate quickly through the skin and this will be especially felt in countries where steamy, hot and humid weather prevails, such as in Southeast Asia, and especially in China and India, which have large populations.
