Ford has announced that it will provide drivers of other car brands' connected cars with early warning of potentially dangerous driving conditions on the road as part of a road safety data sharing agreement.

Hazard information technology Local Hazard Information Introduced in the new Ford Puma model at the beginning of 2020 and now integrated into all new Ford models, it can warn drivers of road safety hazards that are observed "around the corner". Now, with the new agreement, vehicles from other manufacturers will be able to identify and share information about the dangers they encounter, thereby helping to improve road safety and allowing more drivers to prepare for the dangers they face.

Peter Geffers, Connected Vehicle Manager, Ford Europe: "Systems for sharing safety data in more efficient ways as they include more vehicles and telematics sources; Extending the benefits of this technology to those who do not drive Ford cars is a significant step forward. "

With the support of the European Commission, this partnership agreement was formed, at the end of 16 months during which tens of millions of traffic information messages (SRTI) were collected - such as broken down vehicles, slippery roads and more. Partners alongside Ford include BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, with the data sharing system now open to new participants.

Anonymous data from the vehicle, such as the use of fog lights, emergency braking or deployment of airbags, is calculated to determine the presence and location of potential hazards. These warning messages are sent via a FordPass Connect modem to a secure Ford server, from which the data is distributed to SRTI partners who collect hazard messages from various sources and then share them with several vehicle brands.

All relevant information messages are sent immediately, via cellular communication, to vehicles that are near the potential danger and appear on the driver's dashboard, including the possibility of alerting the emergency services, and providing accurate location data in seconds to speed up assistance.
