Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in the movie "Back to the Future". Fun additions

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the "Back to the Future" trilogy, in the collector's version distributed by Globus United, is the best and most enjoyable DVD offering that has arrived in Israel recently. DVD owners have been getting more and more heartwarming products in recent months, not only thanks to the technical quality, but also thanks to the investment in extras for the film, and "Back to the Future" includes a lot of very enjoyable extras. For the members of the DVD generation, this is an opportunity to see a youth film with a lot of effects, the plot of which had a surprising boldness, rare in Hollywood; For older people, who saw the film in the cinema, it has a nostalgic value, and the special additions may increase the enjoyment in both cases.

The "Back to the Future" films, directed by Robert Zemeckis ("Forrest Gump") and produced by Steven Spielberg at Universal Studios, made successful use of special effects, but these were not their greatest uniqueness - in this respect, the "Star Wars" films by George Lucas They have already been overtaken. The uniqueness and power of "Back to the Future" was the use of going back in time as a factor that has consequences for the destiny and role of the main protagonist, and necessarily also for his life and worldview. The genre was so successful that even Francis Ford Coppola made use of it, a year later, in "Marrying Again" with Kathleen Turner, in which she returned in time to her youth.

At the center of the plot is Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) who is friends with a genius professor who builds a time machine inside a car. In the first film, from 1985, terrorists try to harm the professor, who stole plutonium to power the car. In the escape attempt, Marty travels back in time 30 years, to 1955, where he meets his parents as high school students. The next twist in the plot caused the Disney studios to remove the boy from the film, because it did not coincide with the conservative world view of the studios: Marty's arrival in his mother's world in her youth disrupts history and instead of falling in love with the boy who is supposed to be his father, she falls in love with her son Marty. Marty is forced to return history to its intended course and find a way back to the future.

As often happens in series, the first of the three films surpassed both of its sequels. The first "Back to the Future" was nominated for four Oscars, including the screenplay award, and won the special effects award. "Back to the Future" 2 from 1989 took its heroes to 2015 and was nominated for an Oscar for special effects (but did not win), and the third film, from 1990, sent them back 100 years to 1885 and did not win a single One Oscar nomination.

But watching the three films is fun even today, and in the DVD version for collectors, the special extras are especially fun. Among the stories from the days of production, it is revealed, for example, that Michael J. Fox, who was the first choice to portray the character of Marty, left the project due to a workload in the television series "Family Ties". He was replaced by Eric Stoltz, but within two weeks the filmmakers decided it was better to flex the schedule for Fox.

Each of the three films in the special package is accompanied by documentation of the making of the film, interviews with director Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale, scenes that were cut in the edit, explanations by the production staff and more. And everything, including the narration channels that accompany the films with comments - in Hebrew, unlike most DVD packages, where the film itself is translated into Hebrew, but the extras are only for English speakers.
