NASA intends not to allow Spirit to rest on its wheels, but to send the vehicle on the longest journey on Mars to date.
Spirit has already broken the record for continuous one-day travel on Mars when it traveled about 21 meters across the rocky surface. No robot from Adimai, including Spirit's twin, Opportunity, has covered such a distance in one day.
NASA plans to increase the distance that the two vehicles will travel. In the end, she can ask each of them to make a daily trip of 42 meters or more.
The new record is three times greater than the distance record in one day set by the Sojourner vehicle in its 1997 mission to Mars. "From now on we can only climb" said mission manager Jim Erickson.
NASA does not plan anything for the Spirit other than driving in the near future, except for short stops for scientific work.
Spirit concluded her record day of driving by stopping at a series of tiny dunes, each a few inches high. NASA intends to send Spirit towards a crater named "Bonneville" located about 450 meters from the landing point.
Spirit Opportunity's twin also moves from its landing site, half a planet away from Spirit. He will continue to travel to Bedrock and take detailed photographs of the rock layers. Preliminary results show that the rocks were formed from volcanic ash or dust blown by the wind and compacted at this point.

The picture was taken on February 9 by Opportunity that came up from the crater where it landed. In the distance you can see the landing pad and the parachutes that we used a little before hitting the Martian soil. The image shows the two objects at a distance of about 480 meters and it helps to calibrate the accuracy of the vehicle's instruments, in addition to the image of the landing site from space. This is to assess exactly where exactly the spacecraft containing the landing pad and the vehicle landed on January 24th.
