The Cisco company donates to the Chinese government a high-speed communication network for the transfer of epidemic data as a main tool to fight the spread of the Sars epidemic. Cisco announced that it will donate equipment and services worth $2.6 million to the Chinese Ministry of Health, help build the network and support the government's efforts in controlling and monitoring the epidemic.

The president of Cisco-China, Jia Bin Du, says that the establishment of a fast IP network, which will help transfer data about the disease and the patients being treated between all parts of the country, will allow the Chinese government to collect and update SARS data quickly and efficiently. The data that will be collected and analyzed will improve the exchange of information between the medical centers in the country and will streamline the decision-making process regarding SARS.

"Through the technological assistance, we will be able to learn about the progress of the ongoing war against the epidemic within a reasonable time frame. Statistical data will arrive via email and telephone emergency lines, and will be supported by a fast and stable response network that will issue electronic reports on the updated status of the epidemic in the various regions," said Qi Xiaoqiu, Director of the Office of Epidemic Control at the Chinese Ministry of Health. "We believe that China will control the epidemic in the foreseeable future," Key said.

The network will connect the Ministry of Health in Beijing, the Headquarters for Epidemic Prevention and Control, and the regional treatment centers. In addition, one of the provinces in China will be selected as a pilot for the establishment of a local network that will connect the treatment center of the province with two large cities and four central districts in the province. The equipment and support for a period of three years for this project will also be donated by Cisco.

"We are interested in contributing all our technological knowledge to the government's efforts in the war against this epidemic. This is clearly the time for cooperation and we are happy to share our experience in working with medical centers to monitor and control epidemics like those in the US," said Jia Bin Du.
