The GM-UMIT company allocated to the Israeli Silentium (Silentium) a total of about 250,000 dollars for the development of an active system to reduce the noise of air conditioners in vehicles, with the potential to reduce the noise of additional systems in the vehicle. The GM-UMIT company from Israel, which locates and invests in advanced technological research and development in the field of the automobile industry for the global General Motors, found that the system has application potential for GM, and therefore it was decided to invest in its development. The system is installed at the source of the noise, helps to reduce it and improves the nature of the noise. The system was integrated by the development engineers of GM and Silentium into the vehicle and was successfully tested in GM's laboratories in the USA. Following the success of the project, Silentium was directed by GM to the manufacturers of car air conditioners for the purpose of implementing the system in air conditioners for cars manufactured by General Motors.

Silentium develops solutions to silence noises created by engines, compressors and fans, for the automotive industry and other fields. Prolonged exposure to noise in a car creates physiological and psychological effects that are harmful to health and safety and impair the feeling of comfort, and customers also identify a noisy product as inferior and of poor quality. Therefore, the automobile companies have succeeded during the last few years in significantly improving the insulation of the passenger cabin from external noises (road, wind and engine noises), by using passive materials. However, the passive solutions are not effective for noises created inside the car by various devices and accessories such as the car's air conditioner. Silentium provides a solution to the problem and enables OEM companies to silence the products - the noise makers (for example the car air conditioner) already at the source, in an integral, effective and inexpensive way. The system includes three main components: a microphone located next to the source of the noise (the blower of the vehicle's air conditioner) and its role is to continuously sample the noise created, a speaker located at the air inlet to the air conditioner whose role is to transmit noise that is as identical as possible to the source noise but in opposite phase, thus significantly reducing the noise in the passenger compartment of the vehicle as well as a signal processor whose main function is to encode and reproduce the noise. Silentium has developed unique algorithms (protected by a patent), which make it possible to silence the low frequencies (up to 1500 Hz) created by the air conditioner in the entire space of the passenger compartment. Silentium's solution is based on generic components, and its cost is low.

Yossi Brett, CEO of Silentium commented on the collaboration with GM by saying: "The collaboration with GM is very significant in the development of Silentium. The joint work with GM's experienced and high-quality engineering team gives Silentium the ability to closely assess the diverse potential needs in the automotive industry, for the unique noise reduction technology that Silentium has developed. We estimate that the success achieved in the project will lead to further successful collaborations in the near future."

"Silentium deals in a field of interest to GM - GM's investment in Silentium is manifested in several ways: direct financial investment in the development of the system; supply of air conditioning systems for tests in Israel and vehicles for the installation of experimental systems; and the use of special silent cells in GM laboratories abroad", says Benny Kader, CEO of GM-UMIT. "GM has a high regard for the Israeli high-tech industry, which until today has helped immeasurably in the development of solutions for the automotive industries. I am convinced that the cooperation that has lasted for two years with Silentium will also bear fruit for the American automobile industry in general
And GM in particular, and will contribute to establishing the position of the Israeli hi-tech industry and Silentium within it."

GM-UMIT was founded in 1995 as a joint venture of General Motors (GM) and Universal Motors Israel
(UMI) - importer and distributor of GM vehicles in Israel. This unique company is engaged in locating and investing in advanced technological research and development in the field of the automobile industry for GM in Israel.
GM-UMIT works for several units of GM, including the R&D and planning center, the global procurement division, engineering centers and more. This activity is unique of its kind outside the borders of North America. The chairman of the company's board of directors is Avihu Ben-Non and the company's CEO is Benny Kader.
