Finally a fast scanner

Finally, a scanner that keeps pace with the urban emergency room. The "instant scanner" (Statscan) is a digital X-ray device that produces a complete reflection of the patient's body in 13 seconds, compared to the conventional X-ray that produces the same image in 45 minutes after connecting all the parts to create a sequence image from head to toe.

The instant scanner was invented in South Africa in the mid-XNUMXs as a low-dose radiation device to detect "unnecessary" diamond charges on the bodies of miners after a day's work. But it had more beneficial (and ethical) uses specifically in emergency rooms and trauma centers where near-instant diagnosis was required to save lives.

This summer, the R. Adams Crowley Trauma Center at the University of Maryland in Baltimore became the first facility outside of South Africa to operate the specialized scanner. Despite the overwhelming approval of the US Food and Drug Administration last October, the final approval was received only after the scanner was activated in the leading trauma center in the USA, while legitimizing its widespread operation throughout the country.

The secret of the instant scanner's fast operation: linear slot scanning technology. While the conventional X-ray works like a flashlight, firing photonic X-rays over a large area, the instant scanner works more like a laser pointer, emitting focused X-rays from 2-millimeter-wide slots in the scanning arm. (The arm moves along and across the body so that there is no need to move the patient) - The result: prevention of "radiation scattering" so that the device exposes the patient to 75 percent less radiation than any conventional X-ray device.

Using a scanner gives doctors an immediate picture of the patient's condition, injured-gunshot, (or penetrating injuries) as well as a quick decision whether to perform more complicated scans like CT. Also, if the patient arrived at the ER in critical condition and we are unable to speak, the scanner will speak on his behalf.
