First images from the Ofek 16 satellite camera, taken over Syria

The engineering teams of the Space Directorate at the Ministry of Defense and Aerospace Industry continue to prepare the Ofek 16 satellite for operational use and publish today (Tuesday), for the first time, images from Syria taken by the satellite camera in recent days. In the photos you can see the world heritage site 'Tadmor' in Syria, the antiquities of the ancient city and the famous Roman theater.

The Ofek 16 satellite, which was successfully launched into space last month, is an electro-optical observation satellite with advanced capabilities. Satellite installed A camera developed and manufactured by the company "Elbit Systems", Has the best quality, with the best performance-to-weight ratio characteristics available on the market.

At the same time, the Space Directorate at the Israel Defense Forces reveals the national infrastructure for the production of space cameras, which is shared with the Ministry of Defense and the company 'Elbit Systems', which was established with an investment of hundreds of millions of NIS. The national infrastructure includes laboratories for the production of lenses and stick mirrors as well as a vacuum chamber that simulates the conditions in space and is used to test the satellite camera before it is launched for its mission in space.

In the near future, after the completion of the in-orbit testing procedure by the Aerospace Industry, Mafat and Amman, the Ministry of Defense will transfer the satellite to the responsibility of operating 'Unit 9900' - the visual geographic intelligence unit of the Intelligence Division of the IDF, and the satellite will be announced as operational.
