The European Space Agency has not canceled a single mission so far
Over 400 astronomers have called on the European Space Agency (ESA) not to cancel the mission designed to locate Earth-like planets around other solar systems. The Eddington mission, as well as the lander part of another mission - to the planet Hema may be dropped to save cash.
"The argument in favor of Eddington is strong," says Prof. Ian Roxburgh, a supporter of the mission from Queen Mary College in London. However, senior officials at the European Space Agency told the BBC that the mission's condition is serious and that it is the first priority for cancellation.
If built, Addington should be launched in 2008. In addition to searching for planets around other suns, it should examine stellar tremors that will allow astronomers to map the internal composition of stars. This will allow a better understanding of the evolution and age of many stars.
Everyone agrees that this will be a mission that will give valuable scientific output and push the boundaries of knowledge. And the European Space Agency suffers from funding problems that make space science missions difficult. All the missions, with the exception of Eddington and another mission known as Gaia (GAiA) planned to map our galaxy, have gone way over budget. As a remedy for the situation, the senior officials of the agency propose to cancel Eddington as well as the landing component of the Beppi Colombo mission to the planet Hema (Mercury). These will be the first missions that the European Space Agency cancels.
