Mysteries of the Universe 2: Human Faces in Space

One of the conspiracy theories claims that the solar system is full of extraterrestrial clues to humanity in seemingly natural forms that resemble a human face. NASA says that neither bears nor aliens, but optical illusions. In this article are some examples of these illusions

The face and heart on Mars * The face and fingerprint on Eros

The most famous image of human faces taken in space is the one taken by Viking in 1976 and published as a gimmick by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory that same year.
However, already in another photo taken a short time later, the area looks no different from the other ordinary mountains that show a human face, depending on the sunlight hitting them at a certain angle.
Here is NASA's original caption when it released the image.
The orbiting spacecraft Viking 1 photographed this area in the northern latitude of Mars on July 25, 1976, when it was looking for a landing site for the Viking 2 lander. The spots in the photo originate from the absence of data - bit errors - caused by problems in the transmission of data from Mars to Earth. These bit errors form part of one of the 'eyes' and 'nostrils' of the eroded rock that resembles a human face in the center of the image.
The shadows in the rock formations give the illusion of a nose and mouth. Planetary geologists attribute this shape to completely natural processes. The width of the figure is about 1.5 kilometers, when the sun is at an angle of 20 degrees. The photo was taken from a distance of 1,873 kilometers.

Less famous but also more threatening is the face found on the asteroid Eros, as seen in the upper left image. The Nir-Shoemaker spacecraft captured the image of the southern part of the eastern half of Eros on October 28, 2000 at a distance of 194 km. However, the researchers say that quite accidental lighting created the illusion of the face.
Fiance's face

A palm print on a fiance
When the scientists operating the Nir-Shoemaker spacecraft saw this strange and intriguing configuration on Eros (below left), they immediately named it the "handprint".
They did as they always do in cases of mysterious space photography. However, the palm is actually a crater with a diameter of 5.3 km. This is how the palm received the official name Psyche (in Greek mythology Cupid's lover, representing the soul) a suitable name for a crater on a hollow rock named Eros.

Mars also has a heart

Conspiracy theorists point to the infamous Red Face when seeking support for their position that NASA is trying to cover up the presence of aliens so close to Earth.
But are aliens supposed to have a heart too? So one such was observed in 1999 by the Mars Global Surveyor. The researchers say that the heart is not the creation of aliens. In fact or nothing more than a pit, a collapsed area known as a raben.
The shape was created along a fault line as the bedrock moved around it. The width of the valley is 2.3 kilometers.

And actually two more hearts

The planet Mars won the prize of the celestial body with the most hearts in the solar system. This photo was published shortly before Valentine's Day in 2000.
The Mars Global Surveyor photograph reveals two small hearts, barely 255 meters in diameter, in the south polar region of Mars. Unlike the other heart on Mars which is basically a pit, these hearts are hills that protrude above the surface.

The second smiling face of Mars

Less well known than the older face, this red smiley has been nicknamed the "Happy Face Crater" by the scientists who have seen it. The photo was taken in 1999 by the camera on the Mars Global Surveyor.
The Crater of Sheba al-Tserun on the eastern side of the Argir Plain is officially called the Galle Crater, and its diameter is 215 km. The bluish-white color is due to winter ice.
